The Australian Government, Universities and organizations offer a variety of Australian scholarships for international students. These scholarships are for Undergraduate or Postgraduate research/taught courses, vocational education or training.

Below is a list of scholarships in Australia for international students from Africa and developing countries with studies in the 2021/2022 academic session. Many of the scholarships are awarded annually. Take note of the time of the year applications open, and check back regularly.

Australian Government scholarships for international students

Australia Awards Scholarships

Australia Awards, a cornerstone of the Australian Government’s development assistance program for Africa, provide access to postgraduate education, training and professional development opportunities for suitably qualified Africans from eligible countries. On their return to the workplace, Australia Awards Alumni are expected to contribute actively to development in their home countries.
Level of study: Masters degree

Australia engages with developing countries at government, business, professional and community levels. Australia Awards Fellowships offer Australian organisations, from all sectors, the opportunity to deepen and broaden their links with leaders and professionals in developing countries.

Australian Government Research Training Programme (RTP) Scholarships for International Students

On 31 December 2016, the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) ceased and was replaced by the Research Training Program (RTP) from 1 January 2017.  The RTP provides block grants, on a calendar year basis, to higher education providers (HEPs) to support both domestic and overseas students undertaking Research Doctorate and Research Masters degrees, known as higher degrees by research (HDRs).

University of Newcastle & Commonwealth Government Scholarships for Masters & PhD
The University of Newcastle Australia is offering university and commonwealth government scholarships for Research Masters & PhD degree for international students. Scholarships are granted on the basis of academic merit, which includes your undergraduate grade point average and extra research attainments.

La Trobe University Undergraduate & Postgraduate Africa scholarships
These scholarships offer up to $5,000 worth of tuition fees for students from Sub-Saharan Africa studying undergraduate or postgraduate coursework programs.

Sydney Scholar Awards for International Undergraduate Students

 If you are an international student, have recently completed an International Baccalaureate or educational award equivalent to the HSC, and are applying for admission through UAC, you are also eligible to apply.

Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI) Australia for Masters & Doctoral Studies
The University of Adelaide offers a scholarships scheme for international students undertaking postgraduate research study for Master’s and Doctoral degrees. The purpose of the financial award programme is to attract high quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in the University of Adelaide to support its research effort.

La Trobe’s Academic Excellence Scholarships ($10,000 – $20,000) for International Students
La Trobe’s Academic Excellence Scholarships (AES) cover tuition fees for high-achieving international students accepted into our undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs.

University of Melbourne MBA Scholarships for African Students
All successful full-time MBA candidates enrolling into the University of Melbourne are automatically considered for these awards and candidates will be notified of any scholarship support at the time of their application outcome.

Africa Scholarships at Macquarie University Australia for Undergraduate & Postgraduate Studies
Under the Africa scholarships, Macquarie University will provide a specific amount annually to each successful student. Payment of the scholarship will be applied equally towards your tuition fee for each session for the duration of your studies.

Curtin University MBA (Global) Future Leaders Scholarship
The MBA (Global) Future Leaders Scholarship has been developed by Curtin University to encourage and support academically talented students to commence the MBA (Global) at Curtin University.

University of South Australia (UNISA) Scholarships for International Students

The University of South Australia is offering a number of scholarships to international students commencing Masters/PhD programme

Australian Catholic University MBA Scholarship for International Students
The Peter Faber Business School Postgraduate Scholarships are available to eligible international students commencing a course offered by the School of Business. Recipients will receive a AU$1,000 tuition-fee waiver for the first year of their course, provided they continue to successfully complete all their enrolled units. Scholarships are awarded to postgraduates who have a prior academic result of 70% or greater.

USydIS International Scholarships in Australia
The objective of the USydIS is to attract top quality international postgraduate students to undertake research projects which will enhance the University’s research activities. The USydIS is open to all research disciplines; however participation in the USydIS program Research Period 2 and Research Period 3 are at the discretion of the Dean of each faculty.

Sydney Scholars Awards for International Undergraduate Students
The Sydney Scholars Awards offers Year 12 (SS 3) students commencing their studies in 2019 the opportunity to apply for scholarships ranging from $6,000 to $10,000 in value and awarded in duration from one year, up to 5 years (combined degrees).

Macquarie University Scholarships for International Students
Macquarie University International Scholarships are available across most courses to cover international tuition fees for study on campus at North Ryde in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree. The scholarship provides course fees for the minimum course duration.

University of Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS)
The University of Melbourne, Australia offers Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) for international students to study in Australia. Each year the University offers about 200 new Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRSs), of which about 200 are normally awarded to international students as MIRSs.

University of Newcastle Scholarships for Postgraduate Students
The University of Newcastle, Australia, offers a number of postgraduate research scholarships for International students to study for Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Scholarship application is open to international students from all countries with the exception of Australian and New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents. Scholarship applications will be accepted between 1 January and 31 August each year.

Australian Catholic University International Student Scholarship
ACU offers scholarships to up to 20 international students starting undergraduate or postgraduate courses each year. They will cover half the full-time tuition fees. ACU also offers full tuition scholarships for up to two international students starting research degrees each year.
Level of study: Undergraduate Masters and PhD degree

IWC Water Leader Scholarships
The IWC Water Leader Scholarships offer full and partial tuition scholarships for Australian citizens, permanent residents and international applicants for the Master’s in Integrated Water Management program.

UN-Nippon Fellowship Programme in Ocean Affairs for Coastal Developing Countries
The main objective of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for advanced education and training in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science, to Government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing coastal States, so that they may obtain the necessary knowledge to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in UNCLOS and related instruments.
