Can’t afford it? Luckily, there are fully funded scholarships in Italy for international students, and today, we have put together a comprehensive list including scholarships for African and students from developing countries.

Some courses at Italian Universities do not require the IELTS (English language) certificate. However, it is imperative to check the requirements of the scholarship before applying to know if you qualify.

That said, here are over 20 Scholarships in Italy for International Students.

1.     University of Bologna Study Grants for International Students

The University of Bologna offers up to 48 study grants gross to deserving international students who wish to register for Single, and Second Cycle Degree Programmes at the University of Bologna.

Number of Awardees: 48 scholarships: 8 for First Cycle and Single Cycle degree programmes and 40 for Second Cycle degree programmes

2.     University of Pavia Scholarship for African and Developing Countries

The Fund and the selection of the students are managed by a Committee composed by students, professors and officers of the University of Pavia. The Committee will select – among the applicants – the students who will receive a scholarship for the Academic Year.

Value of Program: Selected students will receive 8,000 Euros, paid as monthly installments of 1,000 Euros each. They will decide how to spend them, mainly for living.

3.     University of Turin Masters Scholarship for International Students

Scholarships are dedicated to students who, apart from their citizenship, have obtained their entrance requirement (first cycle degree or equivalent qualification) abroad from an educational institution working outside the Italian system.

Value of Scholarship: The total amount of the scholarship is 9,000 euro, 750 euro per month for 12 months, gross of all charges for the beneficiary’s account

4.     University of Gastronomic Sciences Scholarship for Lower and Middle-Income Countries

The University of Gastronomic Sciences is offering two Masters scholarships to students from developing countries enrolled in one of the Master of Gastronomy programs – either Master of Gastronomy: Food in the World (Food Cultures and Mobility) or Master of Gastronomy: Food in the World (Food Ecologies and Sovereignty) for the academic year

5.     University of Messina Masters Scholarships for International Students

The University of Messina has published the call for the assignment of scholarships to foreign students enrolling to a UniME two-year long Master degree programme (Laurea Magistrale)

Application Deadline: 16th March

Number of Awardees: 40

Value of Scholarship: In accordance with the Call, selected candidates will benefit from a 100€ monthly grant, free accommodation in one of the UniME student Halls of Residence and exemption from the payment of tuition fees for the whole duration of the programme.

6.     Government of Italy Invest Your Talent Scholarship + Internship Program for International Students

Scholarships are awarded for Master’s degree at Italian Higher Education Institutes, (state-owned institutions or institutions legally recognized by the relevant state authorities) partners of the Invest Your Talent in Italy Program. The program includes the attendance of a mandatory internship at selected Italian companies’ partners of the initiative.

Application Deadline: 28th February

Value of Award: exempted from the payment of tuition fees, health insurance, 888 Euros monthly allowance every three months

Duration of Program: The scholarship will cover a period of study of 9 (nine) months starting from October 1.

7.     SDA Bocconi School of Management Scholarships for African Students

Student and Alumni support is the foundation on which SDA Bocconi sets the basis to provide scholarships for future promising young leaders who will, in turn, serve as models and contribute to lead global changes starting in the classroom and ending with a new professional path.
SDA Bocconi School of Management is making available 26 total/partial merit-based tuition waivers to MBA candidates with an outstanding profile. Admission to the Program is independent of the award of any scholarship or tuition waiver.

8.     MBA in International Business Scholarship

MIB School of Management of Trieste in Italy is pleased to announce a scholarship competition for applicants to the XXI Edition of the MBA in International Business.

Application Deadline: 30 June

Value of Scholarship: The Scholarships will go toward tuition fees to attend the XXI edition of the MBA in International Business programme from September to September. The Scholarships will cover up to 100% of the tuition fees (equivalent to 24,000 EUR 20% V.A.T. included). The amount of the scholarships will be discounted from the overall tuition fees. In case of course abandonment or exclusion for any reason, no amount of the scholarship will be paid or reimbursed.

9.     Cattolica Africa Scholarship Program for African Students

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, as part of its mission to foster relationships with developing countries, has developed a special program for students from the African continent. This program will enable students to study for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs taught in English at UCSC’s Milan, Piacenza and Cremona campuses.

10.  United Nations/Italy Long-term Fellowship Program for Developing Countries

The 2nd Level Specializing Master on Navigation and Related Applications is a joint initiative of Politecnico di Torino and Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB) with the collaboration of the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM) and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. The II Level Specializing Master is a post graduate academic program (taken after a Master of Science program) that provides high quality training. It provides students with professional knowledge and skills needed in the navigation sector.

Value of Award: international round trip air ticket, all expenses in the home country for preparing the abroad travelling, including passport and visa fees, medical examinations, inoculations, and other miscellaneous items, and domestic travel to and from the international airport of departure, in the home country; Salary and related allowances; Life insurance and health insurance.

Duration of Program: The Master in Navigation and Related Applications (MNA) Programme begins in January and lasts for 12 months including a period ranging from 3 to 4 months for hands-on pilot project (internship).

11. Italian Government Scholarships for Foreign Students

The Italian Government awards scholarships for studying in Italy both to foreign citizens and Italian citizens resident abroad (IRE). The aim of these scholarships is fostering international cultural cooperation, spreading the Italian language, culture and science knowledge and promoting the economic and technological sectors of Italy all around the world.

Value of Scholarship: the scholarship holders are exempt from the payment of the university tuition fees, an insurance policy against illness and/or accident.

12. Coimbra Group Short-Term Scholarship Program for Young Researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa

Universities of the Coimbra Group offer short-term visits (generally 1 to maximum 3 months) to young African researchers from higher education institutions from Sub-Saharan Africa. The main aim of this scholarship programme is to enable scholars to undertake research in which they are engaged in their home institution and to help them to establish academic and research contacts.

Value of Award: Successful candidates will have access to excellent academic knowledge in quality facilities. The scholarships include financial support for tuition, living costs, airfares etc.

Duration of Program: From 1 to maximum 3 months.

13. CICOPS Scholarships for Developing Countries – University of Pavia

In 1996, the Technical-Scientific Committee of CICOPS approved a scholarship project aimed at fostering research collaboration between academic from Developing Countries and the University of Pavia. The scholarships were designed for junior and senior members of universities in Developing Countries or members of major research centers and international organizations with specific interests in the field of development studies.

Application Deadline: 31st May

Number of Scholarships: The University of Pavia and the Organization for the Right to Education (EDiSU) provide 10 scholarships annually

Value of Scholarship: Scholarship includes travel (economy class), board and lodging expenses and a pocket money of 150.00 Euro (gross) per week.

Duration of Scholarship: CICOPS scholarships are foreseen for research collaboration in the short period (from 4 to 10 weeks) in order to encourage the mobility of researchers from developing countries.

14. European University Institute (EUI) Policy Leaders Fellowships for Young Policy Professionals

The Policy Leaders Fellowship of the School of Transnational Governance provides a unique opportunity for policy professionals from around the world to further develop their policy work and professional skills whilst participating in workshops, training and skills development sessions, conferences and other events, in addition to interacting with the other fellows, policy makers and the academic community at the EUI.

Application Deadline: 22nd February

Number of Awards: Not specified. The Policy Leaders fellowship is however highly competitive.

Value of Award: The fellowships are fully-funded with a grant of € 2,500 per month.  Fellows must live in the area of Florence for the duration of their fellowship. A family allowance is available where appropriate.

15. Rockefeller Foundation Art Residency Programme

The Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Residency Programme has a track record for supporting the generation of important new knowledge addressing some of the most complex issues facing our world, and innovative new works of art that inspire reflection and understanding of global and social issues.

16. TWAS Young Scientists International Awards for Developing Countries

TWAS, the African Union (AU) and national ministries of science and technology, Italy are entering into partnership with national science academies, scientific research councils and high-level research organizations in Africa to institute ‘AU-TWAS Young Scientist National Awards’. The awards are designed to recognize scientific excellence in their countries.

17. Max Weber Post-Doctoral Fellowships for International Scholars

Amongst the largest, most prestigious and successful post doctoral programs in the historical and social sciences, and located in one of the most beautiful settings, with truly outstanding research facilities. All areas and types of research within these fields are considered.

Number of Awardees: 50 to 60 candidates

Value of Fellowship:

  • The Fellowship provides a grant of 2000 euro per month plus – when appropriate – a family allowance.
  • The Max Weber Fellows enjoy the superb research facilities of the European University Institute (including an outstanding library, a shared office space, and a personal research fund of 1000 Euros).
  • The MWP is unique among postdoctoral programmes in helping Fellows to become full members of a global academic community.
  • Fellows are given training and support in all aspects of an academic career – from publishing and presenting, teaching, applying for research grants and jobs. A particular focus is placed on communicating effectively in English to different kinds of academic audiences.

18. Politecnico di Torino International Scholarships

Get in here if you are an engineering or architectural design student. The Politecnico di Torino has several scholarships for international students to study academic programs in Engineering or architecture fields. One of the scholarships, the Eni Project, is a 20,000 Euro funding for graduate students who are not Italian citizens to attend 2-year masters in Petroleum and Mining Engineering. There are several of these international scholarships. You need to apply early when they are open usually at the beginning of the year before April to win them.

19. EDISU Piemonte Scholarships

All Students including international students enrolling in a full-time Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD Degree courses at one of the Universities of Piedmont, that is, The Politecnico of Torino, the University of Torino, the University of Eastern Piedmont, can apply for EDISU scholarships if they meet the merit and economic requirements of the competition. Part-time students can apply if enrolled in a bachelor’s degree. The Scholarships in Italy for International Students varies depending on many conditions. Accommodation service can also be granted to non-resident students.

20. Padova International Excellence Scholarship Programme

The University of Padova offers Scholarships in Italy for International Students wishing to pursue a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree completely held in English in Padova. The scholarship includes a gross allowance of € 12,000, and a tuition fee waiver for 1 year.

21. Scuola Normale Superiore PhD Scholarships

Scuola Normale Superiore offers more than 70 fully funded PhD Scholarships in Italy for International Students. All students admitted to the PhD program receive full financial support. This includes tuition, fees, free meal, and a cost-of living scholarship.  All students will be assigned further funding for their research activity and travel.

22. Luiss University ENI Scholarships for African Students

ENI scholarships are dedicated to international students coming from Angola, Mozambico, Ghana,Congo, Ivory Coast, Nigeria. Scholarships are available for students admitted to one Luiss Bachelor’s Program totally taught in English. Students are not required to send/upload additional documents, just to regularly apply for one Luiss program following the instructions reported here.

Value and Duration of Award: Scholarships cover travel expenses, tuition fees, board and lodging for one academic year and can be renewed for the following years on the basis of academic performance.

23. International Masters in Rural Development (IMRD) Scholarship for Students in Developing Countries

The International Master in Rural Development (IMRD), offers the opportunity to become an international expert on rural development in its diversity of approaches and applications. Scholarships for masters and undergraduate students in developing countries are offered by both the European Commission (as it is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree EMJMD course) and the Belgian Government VLIR-UOS.
