Call for Proposals: US-Tanzania Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) Programme 2016

U.S. Mission Tanzania is calling for proposals for projects to preserve cultural heritage through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP). 

Application Deadline: Letters of intent to submit proposals: 1st December, 2016. The deadline for the full proposals is 4th January, 2017.

About the Award: The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) supports the preservation of cultural sites, cultural objects, and forms of traditional cultural expression in more than 100 developing countries around the world. AFCP-supported projects include the restoration of ancient and historic buildings, assessment and conservation of rare manuscripts and museum collections, preservation and protection of important archaeological sites, and the documentation of vanishing traditional craft techniques and indigenous languages. Cultural heritage endures as a reminder of the contributions and historical experiences of humanity. By taking a leading role in efforts to preserve cultural heritage, the U.S. shows its respect for other cultures. Individual awards can range from $10,000 to $200,000.

Eligible Candidates: U.S. Mission Tanzania encourages AFCP proposals from reputable and accountable non-commercial entities, such as:

• Non-governmental organizations;
• Museums;
• Government insitutions dealing with cultural heritage and preservation; and
• Similar institutions and organizations that are able to demonstrate the requisite experience and capacity to manage projects to preserve cultural heritage.

Type: Grants

Eligibility: U.S. Mission Tanzania gives top priority to project activities that are appropriate and in keeping with international standards for the preservation of cultural heritage. These activities may involve:

• Cultural sites, such as, but not limited to, historic buildings and archaeological sites;
• Cultural objects and collections from a museum, site, or similar institution – that include, but are not limited to, archaeological and ethnographic objects, paintings, sculpture, manuscripts and general museum conservation needs; or
• Forms of traditional cultural expression, documentation and audiovisual recording of traditional music and dance forms for preservation and eventual dissemination, indigenous languages, or support for training in the preservation of traditional arts or crafts in danger of extinction.

Selection Criteria: U.S. Mission Tanzania particularly encourages projects that:

• Directly support U.S. treaty or bilateral agreement obligations, such as cultural property protection agreements;
• Support the preservation of inscribed World Heritage sites;
• Support risk reduction and disaster preparedness for cultural sites and collections in seismically active and other disaster-prone areas; or
• Engage women, youth, or underserved communities.

Value of Programme: Individual awards can range from $10,000 to $200,000.

Duration of Project: Applicants may propose project periods of up to 60 months [five years]; projects must begin before September 30, 2017, and conclude no later than September 30, 2021).

How to Apply: 

Phase 1

The letter of intent must include the following information on the proposed project:

• Title (less than 20 words);
• Institon submitting the proposal;
• Geographic project location in Tanzania;
• Performance period (start and end dates); and
• Executive summary (no more than 200 words)
• Estimated budget ($10,000 to $200,000)

Phase 2

U.S. Mission Tanzania will invite shortlisted institutions to submit final proposals by January 4, 2017. Full proposals must be submitted via email to darpdproposals@state.gov. Final project proposals must include the following:

• Project basics, including:
  • Title;
  • Performance period;
  • AFCP focus area; and
  • Other top-level information.
• Project applicant information, including:
  • Contact information;
  • DUNS Number; and
  • SAM registration.
