Only one-third of developing countries have succeeded in achieving the “Education for All” goals set by the international community in 2000 but none in sub-Saharan Africa. This is the stocktaking made by Unesco, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in the latest EFA Global Monitoring Report. In 2010, 61 million primary school-aged children were not enrolled in school, according to a new study by UNESCO. For 15 years, this figure has been declining. Girls, who accounted for 58 per cent of out-of-school children in 2000 compared with 53 per cent in 2010, benefited greatly from efforts to improve access to education.
