The MasterCard Foundation Scholarship for African Students is open for Application at Michigan State University, USA
The MasterCard Foundation is partnering with over 10 recognized universities and higher institutions around the world to offer the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, a $500 million education initiative that will provide talented yet economically disadvantaged students from developing countries, particularly from Africa, with comprehensive support for secondary and university education. The scholarship will be offered to 15,000 African students for 10 years.
Duke University, USA, in Partnership with MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, is offering Undergraduate Scholarships to Students from Sub-Saharan Africa
At the University of California Berkeley, the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program will provide holistic support—financial, academic, social, and career counseling—to 113 students from Sub-Saharan Africa from 2012 to 2020. UC Berkeley will receive $30 million in funding
Rotary International offers the fully funded Rotary Peace Fellowship for master’s degrees and Professional Development Certificates for young professionals around the world.
The 7UP Harvard Business School Scholarship was created by Seven-Up Bottling Company Plc of Nigeria to commemorate its 50th anniversary and aligns with the company’s overall vision of creating a greener future for promising Nigerians. The scholarship is for a Nigerian citizen. Note that the scholarship covers tuition, board, and travel expenses for both years of the MBA program.
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), with financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, announces competitions for Dissertation-completion fellowships and Early-career postdoctoral fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF provides grants to women from developing countries to help further their education and strengthen their leadership skills to improve the lives of women and children in those countries. The MMMF offers scholarships for women from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada. Note that the MMMF award grants are approximately $12,000 each.

The African Presidential Scholars Program offers early-career faculty from Ghana, Liberia, South Africa, and Uganda the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and students at the University of Michigan USA during residencies of two to six months in Uganda in the fields of African Heritage, African Social Research, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Additionally, at the University of Michigan, scholars will have access to library and research materials to forward their research programs, scholarly writing, course development, doctoral work, or other relevant activities.

The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries to advance the status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers. Over 50 women’s human rights advocates from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe have participated in the LAWA Program, and we hope to include Fellows from additional countries in the future. The LAWA Fellowship provides the tuition for the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education Course (a U.S. $2,200 benefit) and for the LL.M. degree (a U.S. $42,065 benefit) at the Georgetown University Law Center, as well as professional development training.

The International Peace Research Association Foundation (IPRA), USA invites applications for the Dorothy Marchus Senesh Fellowship for Women from Developing Countries in Peace and Development Studies. The scholarship has been awarded biennially since the first award was made in Groningen, Netherlands in July 1990. Additionally, every other year one woman receives school expenses for $5,000 per year for two years.

McGill University, Canada, is partnering with the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program to offer undergraduate scholarships for African students for 10 years. Scholarships will be available at the Masters level beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year.

The University of British Columbia, Canada partnered with the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program to grant $25 Million Scholarships for African students; Over the next 10 years, 77 undergraduate and 35 master’s degree students will go through the Program.
This is a two-year fellowship program for outstanding Ph.D. students nominated by their universities. To be eligible for this fellowship, you must apply during your second or third year of PhD studies. Note that fellowships are granted by Microsoft Research at the discretion of Microsoft.

The Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships are offered annually to the most talented doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences to encourage emerging talents in Canada and Developing countries. Up to 15 Trudeau Scholarships are awarded each year to support doctoral candidates pursuing research of compelling present-day concern, touching upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation. Note that the Scholarship of up to $180,000.

Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites each nominating agency, university, or university body to forward a specific number of nominations for the Commonwealth scholarship for developing countries. Each nominating agency/university body is responsible for its selection process, and in most cases, it will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations. Note that approximately 200–230 scholarships are awarded each year.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. Since its establishment in 1959, 27,000 individuals have benefited, with 120 to 150 awards every year. Scholarships are open to Commonwealth citizens. Awards are for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD).
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship Programme was established in 1983 and is now an internationally prestigious scheme with over 41,000 alumni. In 2011–12, over 700 Chevening Scholars were studying at universities across the UK. Chevening Scholarships are currently offered in approximately 110 countries. Additionally, Chevening awards enable scholars to study a one-year postgraduate Master’s course in any discipline at any UK university.

University College London (UCL) and the Africa Educational Trust (AET) have agreed to collaborate in a scheme to enable students from Africa who are financially unable to study in the UK to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at UCL. Two full bursaries are available annually. Each bursary consists of full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance for the duration of the student’s program of study, as well as economy air travel to and from the UK at the beginning and end of the bursary holder’s degree program.
The University College London (UCL) collaborates with the United World Colleges (UWC) in a financial aid scheme to enable graduates of UWC who are financially unable to study in the UK to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at UCL. Each bursary will consist of full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance for the duration of the student’s program of study, as well as international economy air travel to and from the UK at the beginning and end of the bursary holder’s degree program.
Several Oxford colleges offer Reach Oxford scholarships (formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) to students from developing countries who, for political or financial reasons, or because standard educational facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries. Scholarship winners will study at Oxford University, UK, under any undergraduate course of study except medicine, due to the course length and expense. Note that the scholarship covers university and college fees, a full grant for living expenses, and a return flight to the UK at the start and end of the course per year.
Loughborough University, UK, offers full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa through the Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships. Note that the scholarships will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded).
Loughborough University offers over 100 postgraduate scholarships for the 2011–2012 academic year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union (EU). Additionally, these scholarships will be worth 25% of the program tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

The University of Warwick International Office and the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust (ANFCT) award up to five scholarships of £10,000 each to students from Sub-Saharan Africa each year.
The Africa LLM/MSc Tercentenary Scholarship is open to all African students (with preference to West Africa) who have applied to an on-campus LLM or the on-campus MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Edinburgh Law School. The scholarship will cover the costs of postgraduate tuition fees for one academic year. Additionally, the successful applicant will also be given a partial maintenance grant (£6500) to help fund their studies at the University of Edinburgh.
The Wolfson Foundation seeks to support excellence through the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in Humanities for international students at the University of Oxford. Funding covers 100% of university and college fees and a grant for living costs of at least £15,000 per year. Funds for research and training costs will also be available to scholars.
The Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme cultivates the leaders of tomorrow from transition and emerging economies by providing outstanding university graduates and young professionals with the opportunity to pursue fully funded graduate studies at the University of Oxford and access to a comprehensive program of leadership development, long-term mentoring, and networking. Note that funding covers 100% of university and college fees and a grant for living costs (the rate in 2011-12 was £13,500)
The Clarendon Fund scholarships are open to all graduate (Masters, MBA, and doctoral degree) applicants, regardless of nationality, for entry into the University of Oxford, UK. Additionally, all Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and provide a generous grant for living expenses.

Canon Collins Trust invites applications from students from Southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) for scholarships for Masters study at the following universities: King’s College London, SOAS, the University of Sussex, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Leeds, and the University of Sheffield. St. Antony’s College Oxford, in partnership with the international integrated energy company Eni, is offering three students from African universities in Angola, Ghana, and Nigeria the opportunity of fully funded scholarships, including fees and living expenses, to undertake postgraduate study at the Master’s level at the University of Oxford, commencing in October 2011. Moreover, the Eni Masters scholarship strengthens African leadership.

Durham University awards three postgraduate scholarships to outstanding candidates from West Africa- Benin, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo. Each scholarship is a one-year postgraduate tuition fee waiver, one each in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health, Faculty of Science, and Durham Business School. Students do not have to pay for their tuition fees but are only responsible for accommodation and living costs during their stay in the UK.

Each year, the Rhodes scholarship is offered to about 83 Rhodes Scholars selected from 14 countries or groupings of countries around the world (including select African Countries) to study for a postgraduate degree at the University of Oxford. They are outstanding young women and men of diverse backgrounds and interests who show strong potential to be public-spirited leaders for the world’s future.
The Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships are open to applicants who are ordinarily resident in South Africa applying to start any new degree-bearing course, except for PGCert and PGDip courses, at the University of Oxford. The Fund promotes links between the University of Oxford and South African Universities. Additionally, scholarship recipients receive a financial support grant of up to £6500 for fees or living costs.
Previous Application Deadline: 6 January for Medical Sciences and Philosophy and 20 January for all other subjects.
Through the generosity of the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust, three Ferguson scholarships have been established for African Students (African nationals and residents in Africa), who wish to undertake a taught masters course at SOAS. Each Ferguson Scholarship is valued at £14,956 and lasts for one year. Note that the scholarships can be used for fees and the remainder towards maintenance.

The Waverley Fund awards scholarships for Masters (MSc) in African Studies to academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future careers. The African Studies Centre, University of Oxford, UK, was launched in October 2004 and attracts extremely high-quality graduates. Note that 100% of university and college fees and a grant for living expenses of £13,590 p/a (including return flights) will be awarded for the full duration of a student’s fee liability for the agreed course.

The CASTME Scholarship is an annual scholarship award for postgraduate students from commonwealth countries to study for a master’s Degree at the University of Westminster UK. There is one general scholarship (i.e. students from any Commonwealth country may apply) and another for students from Mauritius. In particular, the candidates will need to show how this award will enable them to enhance the teaching of Science, Technology, or Mathematics in their home country. Masters Scholarship offered at the University of Edinburgh for students from UK/EU and Developing Countries pursuing Global Development Academy programs. Each scholarship will cover the overseas rate of tuition fee, while a further two scholarships will cover the UK/EU rate of tuition fee only.

The University of Edinburgh offers one full-time Master’s scholarship for eligible programs offered by the University through the Edinburgh Global Health Academy Master’s Scholarship for African and Developing Countries. Note that the scholarship will cover the UK/EU “home” rate of tuition fee of up to £5,750.

The Skoll Scholarship is a competitive scholarship for incoming MBA students at Oxford University who pursue entrepreneurial solutions for urgent social and environmental challenges. The Scholarship provides funding and exclusive opportunities to meet with world-renowned entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and investors. Note that the Skoll Scholarship covers the full costs of Said Business School tuition and college fees and also covers partial living expenses based on need, up to an additional £8,000.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a cost scholarship for postgraduate study and research in any subject at the University of Cambridge, England for international students. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is open to citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and US citizens normally resident outside the USA.

The roots of the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme can be traced back to 1997, when Sir Richard Nichols, then Lord Mayor of the City of London, was particularly impressed during his overseas visits by the high regard in which the City is held by foreign business communities and by the number of students who wished to study in the UK in schools and colleges through business attachments, executive exchanges, and management training. Now firmly established, the scheme supports the funding of students from overseas taking Masters level degree courses at British universities or enabling business trainees or officials to undertake study or training in financial and related business activities. Awards vary in size but are usually in the region of £5,000 to £7,500.

Each year, the University of Edinburgh, the UK offers up to four Edinburgh Global Health Academy Distance Learning Master’s Scholarship for International students from Africa and Developing Countries. Note that the scholarship is mainly for medical/global health and education-related courses. Additionally, each distance learning scholarship will have a total value throughout the program of £9,000 which will be deducted from the tuition fee for the entire part-time program of study.

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for 12 Developing Countries to Study for Undergraduate and Master’s Degree Programs The scholarship covers both the tuition fee and living expenses in the amount of SEK8,000 (€878.9799) per month. Scholarship holders within the SI Study Scholarships will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. Note that the travel grant is a lump sum of SEK 10,000. (€ 1098.7249)
The Government of the Czech Republic offers several undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance Programme in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.
UCSC, Italy, offers 12 full Masters scholarships that include tuition and board for students from eligible African countries. 12 full scholarships and 39 partial scholarships will be awarded. Additionally, the full scholarships include tuition and board for the duration of the program. Candidates who do not qualify for the full scholarship may be selected for the partial scholarships that cover part of tuition, whereas all other living costs and travel will be at the expense of the student.
VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study for a master’s or training program in Flanders, Belgium. 180 Masters and 70 training scholarships in Belgium will be awarded to students from developing countries in 2012 (50% for African students and almost 50% for women). Note that the scholarship covers all related expenses (full cost).
Within the program for international courses and training programs, the Commission Universitaire pour le développement (CUD) grants 150 scholarships for participation in the courses and 70 for participation in the training programs. Only applicants originating in developing countries qualify for selection. Additionally, to be eligible, candidates must reside and work in their country at the time of the file’s introduction.
DAAD scholarship programs have benefited hundreds of African students since their inception. The scholarships are awarded each year to postgraduate students wishing to study for a Master’s or PhD degree. Additionally, the DAAD scholarships can support students who want to study in their country (in-country scholarships) or abroad.
The main objective of the Norwegian Quota Scholarship Scheme for developing countries is to contribute to capacity building through education that will benefit the home country of the students when they return. Most universities and university colleges in Norway participate in the Quota scheme. Most of the programs offered are at the Master’s or PhD level, but the Quota Scheme also offers certain Bachelor’s study programs. Additionally, each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would in an equivalent educational program.
Irish Aid Fellowships for Subject areas relating to Justice, Law and Order, Education, Macroeconomics Private Sector Development and Social Development, Gender, HIV/AIDS, Environment, and Governance, are awarded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and are targeted mainly at the countries in which Ireland has established development cooperation programs: Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Timor Leste, and Vietnam, plus the Palestinian territories. Note that beneficiaries get the support to undertake higher-level education and training in Ireland or within the region.

Under the TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences, research grants are awarded to high-level promising research projects in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics carried out by either individual scientists or research in Africa and developing countries, to enable them to purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity. Research Grants to individual scientists amount to a maximum of US$15,000 while Research Grants to research units amount to a maximum of US$30,000.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, India, and TWAS, Italy has instituted a postgraduate fellowship program for foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue research toward a Ph.D. in biotechnology, tenable at key biotechnology research institutions in India for a period of up to five years. Additionally, DBT will provide a monthly stipend to cover living costs, food, and health insurance.

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, Switzerland, offers a fellowship program open to outstanding young professors from universities from developing and emerging countries in Africa, Asia, or Latin America pursuing advanced research in areas bridging the fields of international and development studies, broadly defined, and working in disciplines such as anthropology, history, law, politics and political science, and economics. Additionally, scholars receive a contribution towards living expenses. The Institute will cover the costs of travel and visas for participants as well as accommodation costs.

Fellowship program in the Netherlands for Masters, Ph.D., and Short Courses applicants from Developing Countries. Priority is given to candidates who live and work in Sub-Saharan Africa. The fellowship is a supplement to the candidate’s salary and a contribution towards the expenses related to the course or study program.

Aalto University provides a wide range of Master’s programs that are taught entirely in English, targeted for all nationalities. The programs listed above charge a tuition fee of 8000 EUR/per academic year from non—EU/EEA citizens. To that effect, Aalto University offers several full scholarships for non-EU/EEA (international) citizens in these programs.

Africa Guest Researcher Scholarships at Nordic Africa Institute (NAI), Sweden for African Researchers/Scholars 2013 – With preference to Women Researchers. The Guest Researchers’ scholarship includes; a return air-fare (economy class), accommodation, a subsistence allowance of SEK (Swedish kronor) 300 (approx. USD 45) a day plus an installation grant of SEK 2,500 (approx. USD 370) and a shared office and free photocopying facilities up to a maximum of 1,000 copies.

The Lund University Global Scholarship program is targeted at top academic students who are citizens of countries from outside the European Union/European Economic Area (and Switzerland). Top academic students have a proven record of achieving consistently high grades in previous studies. Note that scholarships may cover 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of the tuition fee.

The Nordic Africa Institute (Nordiska Afrikainstitutet), a center for research, documentation, and information on modern Africa in the Nordic region offers 20 to 30 Travel Scholarship for researchers on development Issues in Africa with an emphasis on Social sciences and closely related fields such as anthropology, History, Economics, Human Geography. Note that scholarships are intended to cover travel expenses to Africa and to contribute to the cost of local travel and living expenses.

The WWF Prince Bernhard Scholarships (PBS) are awarded to individuals from Africa, Asia/Pacific, Latin America & Caribbean, Eastern Europe & Middle East who wish to pursue formal studies or professional training in the field of conservation. The maximum amount for any one scholarship under this scheme is CHF 10,000, and preferential consideration is given to requests for less than CHF 10,000.

The Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent provides participants with an intensive learning opportunity to deepen their understanding of the United Nations human rights system, instruments, and mechanisms, with a focus on issues of particular relevance to people of African descent. The Programme will allow the participants to better contribute to the protection and promotion of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of Afro-descendants in their respective countries. Each fellow is entitled to a return ticket (economy class) from the country of residence to Geneva, basic health insurance, and a stipend to cover modest accommodation and other living expenses for the duration of the Programme.

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program (LExS) is offered for excellent non-EU/EEA students enrolling in a Leiden University master’s degree program and for excellent students from all nationalities enrolling in a Master of Law Advanced Programme or MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy.

The MENA Scholarship Programme enables mid-career professionals from Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Syria, and Tunisia to undertake a short course in the Netherlands. Each year there are around 120 scholarships available, which are proportionally distributed among the participating countries. Ideally, half of the scholarships are allocated to female applicants. A MENA scholarship is a contribution to the costs of the selected short course and is intended to supplement the salary that the scholarship holder must continue to receive during the study period.

The Linköping University offers scholarships to new students with excellent academic results. The scholarship is open for students who have applied for a master’s program at the University through the online national application website (see link below) and who have chosen a program at Linköping University as their priority (ranked as No.1 out of 4), and who are required to pay tuition fees. Scholarships within the program LiU International Scholarships will result in a tuition fee waiver of 50-100 %

The Australia Awards for Africa is an initiative of the Australian Government to maximize the benefit of the Australian Government’s extensive scholarship programs and to support enduring ties between Australia and neighboring African Countries. The University of Sydney, Australia offers Undergraduate (Bachelor) and Postgraduate Masters Scholarship for International Students.
Undergraduate: The University of Sydney awards 30 scholarships of AUD$10,000 each per annum, available for a maximum of three years, (total value AUD$30,000) for any Undergraduate program offered at the University (subject to the recipient maintaining satisfactory academic progress each year).
Postgraduate: 30 scholarships of AUD$10,000 each, available as a one-off award (total value AUD$10,000) for any Postgraduate Coursework program offered at the University of Sydney.
The University of Adelaide offers the Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI) scheme for international students undertaking postgraduate research study for Master’s and Doctoral degrees. The purpose of the financial award program is to attract high-quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength at the University of Adelaide to support its research effort. The Malaysian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan are awarded by the Malaysian Government to the nominated students from the Commonwealth countries to study at the post-graduate level in Malaysia. This is a Government-to-government scheme without any bond imposed by Malaysia. The awards for a Master’s Degree are between 12 to 24 months depending on the courses. Awards for pursuing a Ph.D. degree are for 3 years. Note that the Awards are only applicable to candidates pursuing full-time degree programs in Malaysia.

The World Bank and the Government of Japan, through the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program, offer scholarships for Master’s Degrees to postgraduate students from developing countries to study in Japan. The Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established by the Research Grants Council (RGC), aims to attract the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their Ph.D. programs in Hong Kong’s institutions. The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year for each awardee for three years.

The Developing Countries Partnership Program on Scholarship or Beasiswa KNB (Kemitraan Negara Berkembang), is offered for the Master’s Degree Program at one of 12 prominent Universities in Indonesia for 3 years period. The Government of Taiwan through the Ministry of Education (MOE) has established the Taiwan Scholarship Program for foreign students (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) to encourage outstanding international students to undertake degree studies in Taiwan to familiarize themselves with the academic environment in Taiwan and promote communication, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and countries around the world. The purpose of the Education for Sustainable Energy Development [ESED] scholarship is to support outstanding students from developing countries pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of knowledge about this subject. These scholarships are available to up to 10 outstanding students from developing countries and economies in transition, for a period of up to two years for a Master’s degree, awarded annually. Masters level students get scholarships of US$ 23,000 per year for up to two years.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), as part of its program to support member States, is partnering with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to promote leadership development through a practical and on-the-job fellowship. The program is aimed at enabling young African professionals to develop leadership capacity in a large institution, gain knowledge of the functioning of the United Nations, have a better understanding of Africa’s socio-economic challenges, and contribute to the analytical, advocacy, and policy advisory work of the Commission. Fellowships are awarded for 12 months.

Launched by the Schlumberger Foundation in 2004, the Faculty for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging economies who are preparing for Ph.D. or post-doctoral study in the physical sciences and related disciplines at top universities abroad for their disciplines.
