Marine Research Institute (Ma-Re) Post-doctoral Research Fellowship at University of Cape Town, South Africa 2018/2019

 Ma-Re seeks a Research Associate (UCT post-doctoral research fellow) as part of the international project “Humpback Whales in a Changing Climate”, in collaboration with Australia and other South African universities.

About the Award:  The candidate will develop the modelling component of the project to study the role of ocean conditions in determining the migratory patterns in the Southern Ocean and along the eastern coast of South Africa. A combination of large scale and regional scale ocean models will be used, in conjunction with ocean biogeochemistry models of various complexity.

Eligibility:

  • The candidate must have experience with the implementation of regional or global ocean numerical models, data analysis and visualization. A publication record of peer reviewed articles pertaining to ocean numerical modelling is required.
  • Prior experience with the use of biogeochemical ocean models is preferred but not necessary.
  • The candidate is expected to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of the Ma-Re multi-disciplinary
    team under supervision of the PI A/Prof Marcello Vichi, as well as in the framework of the international project. The fellow will be registered in the Department of Oceanography at UCT.
  • The candidate must have completed their PhD by the appointment start date, or have graduated with a PhD within the past five years.

Value of Award: The value of the fellowship award is between R300 000 and R400 000 per annum, depending on research experience. Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are non-taxable, meaning that fellowships must be granted without fringe benefits and no services are required of the successful candidate in return for the fellowship beyond the agreed research activity.

Duration of Programme: The fellowship tenure is two years with the possibility of renewal for one additional year,
contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
