About the Award:Â The Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences (QAEHS)Â is offering up to six PhD scholarships in the 2018 round of the QAEHS PhD Scholarship Scheme. A maximum of three domestic and three international scholarships will be awarded to start at UQ in research quarter 2 2019 (1 April 2019). The scholarships will be for three years, with possible extension to four years.
There are 16 available projects across the eight QAEHS research themes listed below.

Environmental Health Toxicology
- Alternative matrices for personal exposure monitoring: explanted silicone prostheses and wristbands
- Characterisation of novel substances in wastewater that select antimicrobial resistance
- Wastewater fingerprinting as a tool to inform on community health
Emerging Environmental Health Risks
- Developing passive sampler monitoring approaches for use in wastewater based epidemiology
- Bioaccumulation potential of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) in humans
- Calibration of new passive sampling monitoring technologies for aquatic pollutants as part of regulatory compliance monitoring
Environmental Health Risk Assessment
- Bioaccessibility, interaction effects and risk assessment of mixed metals
- Occurrence and health risk assessment of rare earth elements in the food chain
Environmental Health Risk Communication
- Communicating about uncertain environmental health risks
- Chemical exposure concerns and how they relate to health- and environment-related decisions
Environmental Health Microbiology
- Using phage to control opportunistic pathogens in drinking water distribution systems
- The interaction between non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance
Environmental Health Epidemiology
- The role of family environments to the development of cardiovascular health: an intergenerational perspective
Environmental Health Regulatory Science
- Regulating the design and construction of nicotine and tobacco products
- Health education interventions to increase smoking cessation among people from priority populations
Environmental Determinants of Infectious Diseases​​​​​
- Understanding human-bat interactions using systems dynamic modelling
Type:Â PhD, Research
Eligibility: To be eligible to apply you must meet the entry requirements for Higher Degrees by Research at UQ.
Number of Awards:Â 6
Value of Award:Â $27,596 per annum (2019 rate) for three years, with possible extension to four, with additional living allowance support of $5,000 per annum for three years. For international students, tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) are included.
Duration of Programme:Â The scholarships will be for three years, with possible extension to four years.
How to Apply: Applications should be submitted through the UQ online application system. You must indicate your preferred project in the online application (enter the project name you are applying for in the ‘Research project title’ field).

- Academic CV
- Academic transcript for all post-secondary study undertaken, complete or incomplete, including the institution grading scale
- Award certificates for all completed post-secondary study
- Evidence for meeting UQ’s English language proficiency requirements
- Two referee reports from persons who can best comment on your prior research experience. UQ will contact your referees directly, but you will need to enter their details into the application form.
UQ will accept scanned copies of the above (your) original documents. If you enrol at UQ you must retain your original, hardcopy supporting documentation for the duration of your studies.
