About the Award: The post-holder will work on the Translational Research to Reduce Mortality from CNS Infections in Africa study. This is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) through a Global Health Professorship to Professor Joe Jarvis (https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/aboutus/people/jarvis.joe). The overall aim of the NIHR funded project is to improve outcomes of adult meningitis in high HIV-prevalence African settings.

The post-holder will be primarily responsible for the laboratory aspects of the study at LSHTM, will have experience of undertaking laboratory research in the context of tropical disease epidemiology and proven expertise in diagnostics, genetic epidemiology and molecular biology.

Eligibility: The successful candidate will hold an PhD, DPhil or equivalent degree in a relevant area of biological sciences; experience working with and developing PCR-based diagnostic assays and immunoassays is essential, as is a strong working knowledge of transcriptomics, genomics, and bioinformatics. Specific training in the use of statistical analysis in genomics and experience in performing evaluations for diagnostics, laboratory methods and protocols would be highly desirable. The successful candidate would also be expected to liaise closely with collaborating partners in both the UK (primarily the cryptococcal meningitis research group at St. George’s University of London, www.sgul.ac.uk/research/centres/ii/projects/cryptococcal-meningitis-group) and in Africa. This will involve travelling regularly to St. George’s, and performing support visits approximately twice per year, for 2-3 weeks at a time, to the African collaborating organisations.

- Research Fellow: Grade 6 scale from £39,304 – £44,634 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting)
- Assistant Professor: Grade 7 scale at £45,878 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting).
The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
