The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the University of Cape Town is offering up to five Shuttleworth Postgraduate Scholarships ( MSc and PhD levels) to highly motivated black South African students, who aspire to become academics.

About the Award: The Shuttleworth Postgraduate Scholarship aims at training the next generation of black South African pure and applied mathematicians by providing a unique learning programme at one of the leading Centres of Mathematics in Africa.

The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the University of Cape Town is a large and dynamic department with research taking place in a wide range of directions: (non-associative) algebra, category theory, computational fuid dynamics, cosmology and gravitation, cryptography, dynamical systems, functional analysis, graph theory, group theory, mathematics education, partial diferential equations, quantum gravity and string theory, (algebraic and categorical) topology.

Eligibility: The Shuttleworth Postgraduate Scholarship is awarded to motivated black South Africans

Number of Awards: 5

Value of Award: Each Shuttleworth Postgraduate Scholarship has a value of R220 000 per annum to cover fees and living costs. In addition each scholar will receive annually R22 000 for computer equipment and research travel.

  • A complete CV including any previous research outputs and/ or thesis if any.
  • A motivation letter explaining why you want to enter this programme, and a brief description of your research interests.
  • Certifed copy of ID.
  • Certifed copies of all academic transcripts and degree certifcates.
  • Three recommendation letters to be sent separately to Mrs Hannival.

Selected applicants will be interviewed and expected to deliver a 20 min oral presentation on a topic of their choice.
