The Population Council is seeking applications for a laboratory scientist from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal or Zambia who is studying/working in an institution in their home country, at the graduate student or faculty member level, with experience working in one or more of the Council’s current biomedical research areas of interest noted below.Â

About the Award: The fellowship provides an opportunity for a biomedical researcher to spend 3 months working at CBR alongside leading scientists in the field. CBR is a nonprofit product development center located on the campus of Rockefeller University in New York City. Our mission it to improve choice and access to products that promote sexual and reproductive health and address unmet global public health priorities. We partner with pharmaceutical companies to manufacture and market our products. Our facilities include six well equipped state of the art laboratories, with access to animal facilities, conducting basic research, preclinical R&D, and formulation and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing.Â

Research Areas: Current research areas of interest for this opportunity focus on basic, preclinical and early formulation research to investigate and explore new drug delivery systems, including: 1.  Discovery and development of non-hormonal female and male contraceptive agents 2.  Discovery and development of novel anti-HIV/anti-sexually transmitted infection (STI) agents 3.  Development of novel HIV/STI cure strategies 4.  Discovery and development of novel drug delivery systems 5.  GMP manufacturing of anti-HIV/anti-STI proteins such as griffithsin 6.  Phase 1 clinical trials of Council microbicidesÂ

Value of Award:
- The Population Council will cover travel-related costs and provide a stipend for cost of living expenses for the fellow. The Population Council will not provide any salary support for the fellow. The fellow’s home institution is expected to continue to cover the fellow’s salary during the 3-month fellowship period.
- Upon returning to his/her home institution, the fellow will help to establish research collaborations between CBR staff and members of his/her home institution.
