Post-doctoral Fellowship in Children’s Rights 2020 at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria

The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, is seeking a Post-doctoral Fellow in Children’s Rights in Africa, and will be hosted within the Children’s Rights Unit of the Centre.

About the Award: The post-doctoral fellow will be hosted within the Children’s Rights Unit of the Centre. The Unit undertakes research and advocacy on various aspects of children’s rights in Africa, and works closely with the African human rights system, especially the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, to enhance accountability for the protection of the rights of children on the continent.

The Unit also collaborates with a number of other child rights institutions from across the continent on various initiatives, including hosting the advanced short course ‘Children’s Rights in Africa’ which is offered in collaboration with the Centre for Child Law at UP and the Children’s Rights Project of the Dullah Omar Institute at the University of the Western Cape.

The prospective post-doctoral fellow will work closely with the team at the Centre’s Children’s Rights Unit, under the supervision of the Centre’s Assistant Director. 

Type:

Eligibility: Prospective candidates should fulfil the following criteria:

• Hold an LLD or PhD degree obtained within the last 5 years
• Hold a post-graduate certification / specialisation in children’s rights
• Have at least 3 years’ experience in project management
• Have a demonstrable research record in children’s rights
• Have demonstrable knowledge of the African Union and its institutions
• Have verifiable experience in engagement with the African Union human rights system

Selection Criteria: Candidates with the following qualifications/skills will have an added advantage:

• Working knowledge of French
• Established research profile in children’s rights
• Experience working in African countries
• Lecturing experience
• Having a permit or other status that allows them to work in South Africa

Value of Award: The fellowship provides a reasonable compensation package in accordance with UP’s terms for temporary post-graduate posts. 

Duration of Award: The fellowship is for an initial period of 6 months, renewable subject to performance and availability of funds.
