The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees program was born in 2004 following the publication of policy papers in Europe that emphasized the merits of a Joint Program. It was also largely inspired by the story of a European scholar, Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus. He was a Dutch philosopher and Christian humanist widely considered to be the greatest scholar of the northern Renaissance. Erasmus travelled and studied in many European countries. His story is a model embodying the principles of multinational exchange of scholars and knowledge. The EMJMD is a multinational scholarship program with the sole purpose of exchanging knowledge across borders in the form of Joint University Degrees.
A joint university program is an organization with two or more participating universities or consortium of universities. A student in a joint program studies the same course within the same period, but in different universities of the consortium. Degree awarded bears the names of the universities involved or sometimes each university awards a separate degree to the candidate. Imagine having two or more degrees from reputable institutions in Europe in a year or two. That is exactly what you get after completing an EMJMD. It will dramatically pivot your chances of employment. Research shows that candidates have greater chance of employment after graduation. Imagine the impact on your CV and the opportunity to access different training facilities to develop your career.
The prospect of obtaining multiple certificates is not the only enticement. There is also the cultural experience and the opportunity to explore your field with different participants from around the world. As an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees student, you will study in at least two countries, meeting different kinds of academics and professionals. This in itself is a form of adventure that will enrich your experience and make your qualifications more respectable. The downside of this intensive mobility though, is the challenges with visa acquisition and tension that may come with experiencing different cultures within a short time.
It’ll be interesting to know that your entire academic and travel expenses is taken care of by funding from the EU. If you can manage the monthly stipends carefully, especially those from Africa, you should have a good time studying. There are several other benefits that come with joining the program. We will explain more as the article develops. For now let’s see just how much is funded for scholarship under EMJMD.
According to a 2014 Erasmus Mundus Graduate Impact Study, 65% of students enrolled due to the scholarship offering, while 51% were attracted by the possibility to live and study in Europe.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Scholarship is a very ambitious program. Looking at the budget set to support candidates from around the world, there is no doubt a lot of students will benefit before another budget is set. Not only does Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree program aim to support a large number of students, but also has options for a wide variety of courses. You should be able to find an interesting course from their list, which, due to it being so long, has been reserved for the last section of this article.
From 2004 – 2015, 328 Erasmus Mundus Joint programs were created. 18,600 Masters Scholarships were awarded and 1,400 doctoral fellowships. The program has set aside a €14.7 billion budget for 2014 – 2020. 2 million candidates will benefit from the scholarship within this period. Among the stated goals of the program are the following:
Of all these objectives, strongest emphasis is on employability. Over the years employability has gained attention not only from policy makers in Europe but also from around the world. Employability also features highly in the selection process for most joint programs today. This is due to the strong link with the work world through internships, career guidance and associate partnerships with industries.
It is important to note that there are four categories of students in this program. How much you are given depends on your category. The category that receives the highest financial support is candidates from non-participating and non-partner countries, or from a partner country more than 400km away from their place of study.
Let us list these categories of students out clearly:
Here is a list of participating and partner countries:
Program countries include: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, UK, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, and Portugal.
Partner countries include: are all the other countries that are not Programme Countries (mostly developing countries. This is sometimes determined by the consortium/course.
Because the EU is a big place, cost of living varies widely. Countries that are relatively new to the EU are less expensive to live in than established member countries. If cost of living weighs heavily on you decision regarding where to study, it is better to go for some of the low profile EU countries. Countries like the UK and France are more expensive than others.
According to the British Council, in the UK every student should expect to spend EUR 600 per month to cover accommodation, clothing, utility and other expenses.
Beneficiaries of the EMJMD scholarship who are neither form a program nor partner country should live fine. The EUR 1000 monthly stipend should be enough for a student even in the UK or France, let alone other countries. However it is advisable to know the cost of living in a particular country before applying for a master’s program. There are lots of free statistics providing accurate data on living expenses around the world. Do some Google search.
Because the students undertaking a joint degree are required to move at least between two countries, visa can be serious concern. As a prospective candidate you will be wondering how are to apply for visas during your program. The processes of applying for a visa are similar between most countries, but differences still exist. For one thing, every country has its own immigration and travel policies; for another, visas vary depending on the purpose of travel. There are over 50 participating and partner countries in the EMJMD program. it is not the focus of this article to cover visa application steps and requirement for each country in full detail.
To apply for a student visa to any country, contact the country’s embassy or consulate in your country. You can also do a Google search online. You will find every bit of information if you search deep enough.
The consortium of your program will guide you or even arrange visa on behalf of students in a joint degree once they have started the program. You may only need to acquire visa yourself when you first travel from your country to the first study destination.
To apply for this scholarship you must first find the program you want to take. To do this, go to the Erasmus Mundus catalogue. Scroll down to the search-from area and fill in the options to refine your search. Note that the country on this form does not mean your home country, but the country you want to study in. ECTs credits means the duration of study. 60 ECT credits means one year, and so on. The “years” field means the particular year you want to start your program. Fill in the options accordingly. Anytime you make a change, wait for the page to update. There will be a list of courses and consortiums displayed after each update. Click on anyone to read the full details for that course and see further steps for application.

Each consortium has its own criteria and requirements. You must meet the requirement or criteria before you can qualify for an EMJMD scholarship. After your application the consortium will get back to you with message regarding the status of your application. You will know if you have been awarded a scholarship, placed on the waiting list, or rejected.
