Women are underrepresented in science, particularly in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs), therefore to support the professional development of female scientists, the IVVN will fund fellowships for female post-doctoral researchers working at an LMIC-based research organisation (‘Mentee’) to work with a principal investigator (‘Mentor’) in the UK.
Application Deadline:Â 28th September 2018 (9am)
Eligible Countries:Â Developing countries
About the Award:Â Due to an under-representation of women in science in LMICs, the IVVN will make Fellowships
available to address and support the professional development of female post-doctoral researchers from an LMIC country and working at an LMIC-based research organisation. Fellowship applications are welcome from female post-doctoral researchers (‘Mentee’) to work with a principal investigator (‘Mentor’) in the UK. The IVVN expect this Mentee/Mentor relationship to be identified prior to applying for funding, however, the IVVN can try to provide assistance in establishing this relationship if necessary. Fellowships are available via competitive application to the Network Management Board (NMB).

Type:Â Fellowship, Postdoctoral
Eligibility:Â Funding is for female, post-doctoral (or individuals who will have obtained their PhD before the fellowship begins) IVVN members who are from an LMIC country and working at a LMIC- based research organisation. A research organisation in this context will cover IVVN Members based at academic institutes, governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations or industry.
Selection Criteria:Â The parameters on which applications will be judged include:
- The relevance of the scientific challenge being addressed; the primary criteria is that a key bottleneck to vaccine development is being addressed.
- The significance of the potential outcome of the project; considered in terms of direct applications and/or as a transferable model to other veterinary species or human vaccinology.
- Feasibility of project; likelihood that the stated objectives of the proposals will be achieved.
- Dependency on Mentee-Mentor interaction to conduct the project; demonstration that the interaction between the mentee and mentor will provide complementary expertise to surmount challenges that the mentee working in isolation cannot.
- Innovation; how using the Mentee-Mentor interaction is allowing novel approaches to dealing with the identified challenge to be formulated.
- Opportunities for securing subsequent funding; the potential output of the project must be sufficient to permit subsequent eligible funding submissions to be made.
7 – Effect of fellowship on the career development of the Mentee; the result of the project and Mentee-
Mentor relationship must have a positive effect on the career development of the Mentee.
Number of Awards: IVVN expects to support 2-3 fellowships.
Value of Award: The IVVN has £100,000 of fellowship funding. Funding will cover salary, travel, accommodation and consumables for the Mentee, and consumables and travel for the Mentor. Importantly, capital will be available to allow the Mentee to continue research at their institute. The IVVN envisage that the fellowships will result in a strong Mentee-Mentor relationship, and will provide the Mentee with access to the necessary facilities and expertise to complete of a piece of work that furthers the career of the Mentee.
How to Apply: Please complete the IVVN Fellowship Application Form. Completed applications and associated documents should be sent to the IVVN Network Manager Dr. Carly Hamilton at [email protected] by 9am on Friday 28th September 2018.
