Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) invites scholars based in academic or research institutions in sub-Saharan Africa and working on issues related to governance, accountability, or  political participation to apply for a 4-month fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, to be completed during the Fall 2020 (August – December) or Spring 2021 (January – May) semester.

About the Award: The EGAP Visiting Fellowship seeks to offer social scientists from sub-Saharan Africa the time and resources needed to focus on producing high-quality, quantitative research evaluating innovations in governance, accountability, and political participation. The primary goal of the fellowship will be for the fellow to develop a paper, based on the fellow’s research, suitable for submission to a high-level academic journal.

Each Fellow will be paired with a faculty mentor affiliated with the Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) research network. EGAP is a network of approximately 200 researchers and practitioners committed to the use of quantitative and experimental research methods to evaluate governance and accountability innovations.

Eligibility:

• To be eligible, researchers must be residents in a sub-Saharan African country and hold a faculty or research staff position at a research institution or university in sub-Saharan Africa.
• Applicants must, at a minimum, be working towards a PhD, with preference for those who have fully completed their PhD.
• Researchers from quantitative social science disciplines are encouraged to apply.

• EGAP staff and PhD students at Berkeley will provide additional mentorship during and after the fellowship. The fellowship program will cover the costs of room and board in Berkeley, health insurance, a monthly stipend, visa fees, attendance at select conferences or workshops, and round-trip economy airfare for selected fellows. Please note that the fellowship does NOT provide financial support for spouses or other family members.
• Upon completing the fellowship, the expectation is that scholars will return to their home university or research institution in sub-Saharan Africa and be in a position to continue their own research and guide others in rigorous evidence-based assessments of governance and accountability strategies.
