AfricaLics Short-term Mentorship Fellowships 2020 for Postgraduate/Early-career Women in Developing Countries

With support from Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), AfricaLics opens applications for its short term fellowships for mentorship in innovation studies so that women in LMICs can be supported to the Globelics conference 2020 in Costa Rica.

Application Deadline: 15th January 2020.

Eligible Countries: Low-Income Countries/Lower-Middle-Income Countries (Developing countries)

About the Award: The proposed short term mentorship activity is part of a long term mentorship endeavor to build a critical mass of innovation scholars to enhance inclusive and innovation driven transformation of the African continent through research and innovation that is socially and economically relevant. To this end, we will be offering six competitive fellowships to qualified post graduate students and early career scholars (mainly women from low income countries (LICs) and low middle income countries (LMICs); and applicants from LICs only).

Type: Fellowship

Eligibility: Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:

PhD students

  1. You are a female PhD student in the last year of your PhD from LIC and LMIC.
  2. You are a PhD student from a LIC in your last year of your PhD.
  3. In the case of 1 and 2 above, you haven’t already had an accepted publication.

Early career scholars

  1. You are a female scholar from LIC or LMIC who have received a PhD in the last 3 years.
  2. You are a scholar from LIC who have received a PhD in the last 3 years
  3. In case of 1&2 above, you must have less than 3 journal publications.

Number of Awards: 6

Value of Award: Successful candidates will be supported to:

  • Become members of AfricaLics or Globelics as leading professional associations in the field of Innovation & Development.
  • Matched with mentors in their respective field to:
    • Support in development of research paper proposals for submission to the Globelics conference 2020 in Costa Rica.
    • Support post the event/s to develop a working paper that may become AfricaLics working paper or published in a journal.
  • Receive travel support and accommodation if their papers are accepted for Globelics 2020.

How to Apply: Ensuring competence in the field of innovation studies

Applicant must provide a motivational statement which includes a brief discussion of the paper from within the field of innovation studies that has been most influential in your work today within the sector/ thematic area in which you have expressed interest. This must not be more than 3 pages.

Application process

Interested candidates must submit a full unpublished paper (in PDF) not exceeding 12,000 words (including notes, tables, appendices, list of references, etc.) to mentorship@africalics.org not later than 15 January 2020. The paper can be from any thematic field that is relevant to Africa’s sustainable and transformative development. However, it must demonstrate articulation of concepts in learning, innovation, competence building system approaches. The selection of papers will be based on a peer review process that focuses on relevance, academic quality and originality. The paper will be checked for plagiarism and cannot be currently submitted to a journal for publication. We especially encourage young researchers and women who are committed to develop expertise and skills in innovation studies to apply.
