Tsinghua University- An overview
Tsinghua University, located in northwest Beijing, China, is a public institution dating back to 1911. The primary language of instruction is Chinese, although there are some graduate programs offered in English. For example, the university has masters programs taught in English in Chinese politics, foreign policy and international relations; Mechanical Engineering; and global commercial journalism, among others. Tuition fees vary according to the study program and the language of instruction. The international students of the university come from more than 100 countries, and the majority come from Asia. In a recent year, 41 percent of the university’s non-Chinese students were university students, 29 percent were studying for a master’s degree, 9 percent were doctoral students and the rest were participating in short-term programs. Tsinghua University housing is available for undergraduate and graduate students.
The university comprises numerous schools and departments, which offer programs in a variety of disciplines: science, engineering, literature, arts, history, philosophy, economics, administration, law, education and medicine. In total, there are over 70 degree programs available for undergraduate students at Tsinghua University, as well as many more master’s and doctoral programs. The university has more than 300 research institutions. Among the university’s research laboratories are the Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology, the State Laboratory of Precision Measurement Technology and Instruments and the National Engineering Laboratory for Digital Television. Tsinghua students have about 200 groups of students in which they can participate, such as the Zijing Volunteer Service and the Student Performing Arts Club.
Tsinghua University History
Ching Hue University was established in Beijing, during a tumultuous period of national turmoil and conflicts with foreign powers that culminated in the Boxer Rebellion, an anti-imperialist uprising against foreign influence in China. After the suppression of the revolt by a foreign alliance that included the United States, the ruling Qing dynasty had to pay compensation to the members of the alliance. The Secretary of State of the United States, John Hay, suggested that the compensation of the boxer of US $ 30 million assigned to the United States was excessive. After much negotiation with the Qing ambassador, Liang Cheng, the president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, obtained the approval of the United States Congress in 1909 to reduce the compensation payment by US $ 10.8 million, with the condition of that the funds would be used as scholarships for Chinese students to study in the United States.
Using this fund, Tsinghua College was established in Beijing, on April 29, 1911, on the site of an old royal garden to serve as a preparatory school for students that the government planned to send to the United States. Members of the science faculty were recruited by the YMCA of the United States, and their graduates transferred directly to American schools as third-year students after graduation. Tsinghua’s motto, Self-discipline and social commitment, was derived from a 1914 speech by the prominent scholar and faculty member Liang Qichao, in which he quoted the I Ching to describe a notion of the ideal knight.
In 1925, the school established its own four-year undergraduate program and began a research institute on Chinese studies. In 1928, Tsinghua changed its name to Tsing Hua National University (NTHU).
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, many Chinese universities were forced to evacuate their campuses to avoid the Japanese invasion. In 1937, Tsinghua University, together with neighboring Peking University and Nankai University, merged to form the Changsha Temporary University in Changsha, which later became the National Associated University of the Southwest in Kunming, Yunnan Province . With the surrender of the Japanese occupation forces at the end of World War II, Tsinghua University resumed operations in Beijing.
After the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, China experienced a communist revolution that led to the creation of the People’s Republic of China. The president of Tsinghua University, Mei Yiqi, along with many professors, fled to Taiwan with the nationalist government in retreat. They established the Tsing Hua National Nuclear Technology Institute in 1955, which later became the Tsing Hua National University in Taiwan, an independent and distinct institution of Tsinghua University.
In 1952, the Communist Party of China regrouped the country’s higher education institutions in an attempt to build a Soviet-style system where each institution specialized in a particular field of study, such as social sciences or natural sciences. Tsinghua University was rationalized in a polytechnic institute with a focus on engineering and natural sciences.
From 1966 to 1976, China experienced great socio-political turmoil and instability during the Cultural Revolution. Many university students left the classrooms in Tsinghua and other institutions, and some joined the Red Guards, which resulted in the complete closure of the university as teachers were persecuted or failed to teach. It was not until 1978, after the Cultural Revolution ended, that the university began to receive students and resurface as a force in Chinese politics and society.
In the 1980s, Tsinghua evolved beyond the polytechnic model and incorporated a multidisciplinary system that emphasizes collaboration between different schools within the wider university environment. Under this system, several schools have been reinstated, including the Tsinghua Law School, the Faculty of Economics and Administration, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Policies Public and Administration and the Academy of Arts and Design.
In 1996, the School of Economics and Administration established a partnership with the Sloan School of Administration at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A year later, Tsinghua and MIT started the MBA program known as Tsinghua-MIT Global MBA.
In 1997, Tsinghua became the first Chinese university to offer a Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) program in American law, through a cooperative venture with the Beasley Law School of Temple University.
Since it resumed operations in 1978, Tsinghua University has been re-established among the most elite Chinese universities. He is affiliated with the C9 League and has been selected to participate in the Double First Class University Plan. Most national and international university classifications constantly place Tsinghua among the best universities in Greater China, Asia and the world.
Tsinghua students include the current Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party and Supreme Leader of China, Xi Jinping ’79, who graduated with a degree in chemical engineering, along with the CPC Secretary General and former Supreme Leader of China Hu Jintao ‘ 64, who graduated with a degree in hydraulic engineering. In addition to his powerful alumni, Tsinghua has the reputation of being the host of prominent guest speakers worldwide, with international leaders Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger, Carlos Ghosn and Henry Paulson who gave lectures to the university community.
As of 2018, Tsinghua University consists of 20 schools and 58 university departments, 41 research institutes, 35 research centers and 167 laboratories, including 15 key national laboratories. In September 2006, the Peking Union Medical College, a renowned medical school, was renamed “Peking Union Medical College, Tsinghua University”, although this and Tsinghua University are technically separate institutions. The university operates the Tsinghua University Press, which publishes academic journals, textbooks and other academic papers.
Through its constituent colleges, graduate and professional schools, and other institutes, Tsinghua University offers 51 degree programs, 139 master’s programs and 107 doctoral programs. The university has constantly sought innovation in undergraduate and postgraduate education through partnerships with foreign universities and the creation of new universities and high-profile scholarship programs.
In 2014, Tsinghua established Xinya College, a residential liberal arts college, as a pilot project to reform university education at the university. Following the model of the universities of the United States and Europe, Xinya combines general and professional education in a tradition of liberal arts, with a basic curriculum of Chinese and Western literature and civilization studies and mandatory courses in physical education and languages foreign. In addition, while the majority of Tsinghua university students must choose a specific specialty upon entry, Xinya students declare their specializations at the end of the first year, allowing them to explore several different fields of study.
Tsinghua University is also aggressively seeking greater recognition on the global stage by attracting and financing talented international graduate students. Established in 2013 with an endowment of US $ 300 million and modeled after the Rhodes Scholarship, the Schwarzman Scholars program annually selects and finances 200 academics enrolled in one-year master’s programs in Public Policy, International Relations, Engineering, Economics and Business . These academics reside on the university campus of Schwarzman College, a residential college built specifically for the program.
In 2016, Tsinghua’s expenses were RMB 13.7 billion (US $ 3.57 billion in purchasing power parity), the largest budget of any university in China.

Tsinghua University admission
Admission to Tsinghua for undergraduate and graduate schools is extremely competitive. Undergraduate admissions for domestic students are decided through gaokao, the Chinese national university entrance exam, which allows students to include Tsinghua University among their preferred university options. While the selectivity varies by province, the large number of high school students who apply for college each year has resulted in general acceptance rates well below 0.1% of all examined
Tsinghua University requires a very high enrollment rate for accepted university students. According to a 2008 report, 215 of the 300 students who ranked in the top 10 in the 30 provinces and regions evaluated chose Tsinghua as their first choice school, and 21 of the 30 best scores in each province and region chose the university .
Admission to Tsinghua graduate schools is also very competitive. Only about 16% of MBA applicants are admitted each year.

Tsinghua University acceptance rate
The main admission test with which students participate to join Tsinghua is the Gao Kao or the Chinese National College Entrance Exam. Through the national exam, students can list Tsinghua University as their choice. At this time, the university is home to more than 36,000 students, of which 15,000 are under the undergraduate program and about 19,000 are under the graduate program. Keep in mind that if you are an international student, you don’t have to take Gao Kao, but you should take alternatives like SAT / ACT / IELTS / TOEFL.
Due to the large number of student applicants each year, Tsinghua University has one of the lowest undergraduate acceptance rates in all Chinese universities with only a successful acceptance rate of less than 2% for Chinese. Approximately 200 of the 300 students who ranked in the top 10 in 30 provinces end up choosing Tsinghua University as their preferred university. With this competitive number, it is not surprising that TU has a meticulous admission process. Admission to the graduate program is also quite competitive with an average annual acceptance rate of 16%.
However, the acceptance rate of international students is much higher, and it is estimated that more than 28% of all international students requesting admission are accepted. This is much better than a 2% acceptance rate for the Chinese.
If you are looking for a higher university to enroll, whether for a university or postgraduate degree, Tsinghua University is, in fact, a very good option. However, keep in mind that the competition is quite intense with many more applicants waiting for success. Therefore, getting good grades on college entrance exams will be your first step in obtaining a successful application.
