History of Stanford University

Origins and early years (1885–1906)

Its official opening occurred on October 1, 1891, to 555 students. Its founding President is David Starr Jordan (1851–1931) while its last Founder is Jane Stanford who died in 1905.

Foundation

Stanford was founded by a husband and wife namely Leland Stanford, a railroad magnate, U.S. senator, and former California governor and Jane Lathrop Stanford respectively. This institution of higher education was named in honor of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who gave up the ghost in 1884 from typhoid fever just before his 16th birthday. His parents took up the decision to dedicate a university to their only son and they agreed that the children of California shall be our children. The visitation to the house of Harvard President (Charles Eliot), on whether to establish a university, technical school or museum left finding a university as his reply. This brought about the endowment of $5 million which would suffice (in 1884 dollars; about $139 million today)

The issuing of the university’s Founding Grant of Endowment from the Stanfords occurred in November 1885.
