Newton-Mosharafa PhD Scholarships 2021 for Egyptian Students to Study at UK Universities

The UK Department of Business, Energy and Industrial strategy (BEIS), the British Council and Egyptian Cultural Affairs and Missions Sector are pleased to invite applications for funding to support Egyptian students to do part or all of their PhD at UK institutions.

Application Deadline: 1st October 2020 (4:00 pm Cairo time)

Field of Study: Research will need to focus on one of the following areas:

• Sustainable water management 
• Renewable energy
• Sustainable food production
• Archaeology and cultural heritage
• Affordable and inclusive healthcare

About the Award: Newton – Mosharafa, named after Isaac Newton and eminent Egyptian physicist Ali Moustafa Mosharafa, aims to build UK-Egypt partner research and innovation collaborations centred on shared research and innovation challenges which have direct relevance to social welfare and economic development.

This programme aims to advance the capacity of the Egyptian science sector; increase the amount of quality scientific research and innovation being carried out in Egypt; and help mitigate social and economic challenges in Egypt through the development of new research and innovation. Through all of this work, the fund will aim to establish and maintain sustainable, long term and mutual beneficial partnerships between the British and Egyptian science and innovation sectors.

Selection Criteria: The applicants should ensure their applications meet the criteria set out below. The principles underlying the assessment of applications will be:

• All questions on the Application Form are answered;
• The research area is relevant to the Newton-Mosharafa Fund priorities (see above)
• The research area is ODA eligible
• The activities are planned to deliver the outcomes in the most effective way. If the applicant applies for a general mission and it is deemed by the reviewers that it could be completed more appropriately with a joint supervision placement, the application will be ruled ineligible. Yet, the scholar can apply again the following year as a joint supervision.
• The mobility programme will contribute towards developing a long term sustainable partnership between UK and Egyptian universities.

Value of Grant: The PhD Programme supports Egyptian researchers to do their PhD at UK Higher Education institutions. The programme covers all fees and living/travel expenses. The programme will support both general missions (full degree scholarships three years), as well as joint supervisions (for students to do research for a year at a UK university as part of their Egyptian PhD).

Duration of Grant: The PhD Programme will sponsor:

• General Mission- full three-year PhD with degree awarded by a British Higher Education institution
• Joint Supervisions- the opportunity to spend a year doing research at a British Higher Education institution as part of a PhD at an Egyptian university

Important Notes: Scholars should endeavour to complete their research within 3 years if awarded a General Mission scholarship, and 1 year if awarded a joint supervision scholarship. Extension can only be considered in the final year of the scholarship with evidence demonstrating why the research couldn’t be completed during the timeline of the initial award.
