About the Award: Newton – Mosharafa, named after Isaac Newton and eminent Egyptian physicist Ali Moustafa Mosharafa, aims to build UK-Egypt partner research and innovation collaborations centred on shared research and innovation challenges which have direct relevance to social welfare and economic development.
This programme aims to advance the capacity of the Egyptian science sector; increase the amount of quality scientific research and innovation being carried out in Egypt; and help mitigate social and economic challenges in Egypt through the development of new research and innovation. Through all of this work, the fund will aim to establish and maintain sustainable, long term and mutual beneficial partnerships between the British and Egyptian science and innovation sectors.

Value of Grant: The PhD Programme supports Egyptian researchers to do their PhD at UK Higher Education institutions. The programme covers all fees and living/travel expenses. The programme will support both general missions (full degree scholarships three years), as well as joint supervisions (for students to do research for a year at a UK university as part of their Egyptian PhD).

Important Notes: Scholars should endeavour to complete their research within 3 years if awarded a General Mission scholarship, and 1 year if awarded a joint supervision scholarship. Extension can only be considered in the final year of the scholarship with evidence demonstrating why the research couldn’t be completed during the timeline of the initial award.
