Jakes Gerwel Fellowship – Become a Fellow
Are you in Gr 12 or on a Gap Year? Are you currently in your 1st year at UCT or UP? If so, Jakes Gerwel Fellowship are inviting you to be at the forefront of solving some of the most significant educational challenges in South Africa.
As a Jakes Gerwel Fellow, we want to give you a launchpad from which to craft your impact in the world, an inspirational community to walk alongside and support your journey as well as the best possible learning experiences that set you up for long-term success as an expert teacher, educational leader or entrepreneur.
Applicants must be under the age of 23 on the application closing date.
Successful applicants will be awarded a fully-funded scholarship to study a three year bachelor’s degree at UCT or UP followed by a one-year PGCE teaching qualification.
The Jakes Gerwel Fellowship programme will provide you with academic, personal and leadership development while mentorship from expert teachers and experiential learning opportunities will expose you to exciting models of teaching and education excellence.
Academic requirements:
- Applicants currently in Grade 12:
- Minimum of a 65% average for final Grade 11 results (excluding Life Orientation).
- Applicants currently in Gap Year:
- Minimum of a 65% average for final Grade 12 results (excluding Life Orientation).
- Applicants currently in 1st Year of university:
- Demonstrate the ability to maintain a 60% course average during 1st year degree studies.
- Minimum of a 65% average for final Grade 12 results (excluding Life Orientation)
Additional requirements:
- South African Citizenship or Permanent Resident with a South African ID number.
- Applicants must be under the age of 23 on closing date of application (20th July 2020).
- Candidate Fellows will be expected to complete a three-year bachelor’s degree at the University of Cape Town or the University of Pretoria and then go on to complete a PGCE.
- Candidate Fellows will be expected to teach at a South African high school on completion of their PGCE.
- Applicants must apply to both the University of Cape Town and the University of Pretoria for academic study and placement the following year

Are you in 3rd year or do you already have an undergraduate degree? Are you planning to complete your PGCE at WITS, UJ, UP or UCT next year? If so, Jakes Gerwel Fellowship are inviting you to be at the forefront of solving some of the most significant educational challenges in South Africa.
As a Jakes Gerwel Fellow, we want to give you a launchpad from which to craft your impact in the world, an inspirational community to walk alongside and support your journey as well as the best possible learning experiences that set you up for long-term success as an expert teacher, educational leader or entrepreneur.
Applicants must be under the age of 30 on the application closing date.
Successful applicants will be awarded a fully-funded scholarship to study a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at UP, WITS, UJ or UP followed professional support through a two-year Newly Qualified Teaching program.
The Jakes Gerwel Fellowship programme will provide you with academic, personal and leadership development while mentorship from expert teachers and
experiential learning opportunities will expose you to exciting models of teaching and education excellence.
Requirements:
South African Citizenship or Permanent Resident with a South African ID number. Applicants must be under the age of 30 on the closing date of application Applicants will be expected to teach at a South African high school on completion of their PGCE.
Applicants must ensure they have applied to our partner universities for academic study and placement in the PGCE course for the following year. These partner universities are UP, WITS, UJ or UP.
