The Emily Holmes Memorial Scholarship funding is for postgraduate botanical research and is generously supported by the Amar-Franses & Foster-Jenkins Trust.
The Trust is particularly keen to encourage applicants who are finding it difficult to secure funding from other sources and in a position where a grant would make a significant contribution to their studies.
Funding is available for a research project which forms a part of your postgraduate course, or academic fees.

Who can apply for this Scholarship in Botany?
- Eligible applicants are students currently enrolled on a postgraduate course in a research organisation/university.
- Applications are welcome from anywhere in the world. There are no restrictions based on nationality or age.
- Postdoctoral research is not eligible for funding.
- Strong applicants will have an established collaborative relationship with a Kew scientist who is willing to support the project and application.
- Applications must have a letter of support from a Kew scientist in order to be considered for funding.
- Applications must clearly align with the Kew Science Strategy.
- Strong applications will show a clear link to the work of Kew Science, including an understanding of the different research areas at Kew and the involvement of Kew scientists.
- Please consider how the COVID-19 pandemic may impact your plans within your application.
- It would be useful to understand how any remaining/current restrictions could affect your timeline and any mitigation to these risks.

What is the Benefit of Scholarship in Botany?
Funding is available for a research project which forms a part of your postgraduate course, or academic fees.
- Funding can cover the direct costs associated with carrying out a research project.
- This includes, but is not limited to, travel and subsistence for research visits or fieldwork, conference fees, lab work and consumables.
- The funding may be used to cover the academic fees of the applicant, however this would only be in cases where the need was greatest and could be clearly justified by the applicant.
- The Scholarship fund is a total of £10,000 per annum.
- The maximum an individual student can be awarded is £3,000 with grants typically made between £1,000 and £3,000.
