The rise of the digital economy is driving digital innovation across all sectors and generating large numbers of jobs in the ICT value chain. As consumers and creators of content, young Africans have the potential to be at the forefront of the digital revolution.
The youth population is bursting with energy, creativity and talent which is the fuel for the ICT sector. However, they lack the infrastructure, skills and work experience to access the full range of employment and entrepreneurial opportunities offered by the fourth industrial revolution. It is estimated that ICT accounts for only one to three percent of university enrollment in Africa.
In line with this, Microsoft, Synapse, IOE and the Federation of Uganda Employers have developed the Tech@Work training programme to close the skills gap, targeting youth and workers, focusing on girls and women, mobilizing networks, and providing real-world digital skills training to potential and existing workers. The programme aims at upskilling 5 000 young people in Uganda.
