The Journal of Southern African Studies (JSAS) and the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (SAIPAR, Zambia) call for applicants to participate in a British Academy–funded Early Career Writing Workshop. The workshop will run from April 2023 to March 2025, with in-person and online components. The in-person component of the workshop will take place in Lusaka, Zambia from 15 to 18 August 2023, alongside a JSAS/SAIPAR conference.

AIMS OF THE WORKSHOP
The workshop is a key platform for capacity development in the region. It seeks to contribute to the development of a new cadre of scholars who would be actively involved in writing and publishing. It will use a one-on-one mentoring approach through which participants will work with experienced Journal editors to facilitate the submission of papers to JSAS. The workshop also aims at creating networks with regionally based academics and research institutions.
The workshop hopes to stimulate new thinking in African Studies and encourage the writing of high-quality academic papers. The selection committee is made up of leading scholars from and on the southern African region, including members of the JSAS Editorial Board based in the region. The committee seeks original research and critical thinking. We do not want policy-oriented papers that only describe the results of small-scale studies. Instead, we want papers that show the value of such empirical studies for broader societal issues, including analysis of their political, economic and human consequences.
The workshop will run alongside a jointly organised conference, at which participants will also present their papers alongside established scholars, and where papers will be presented and critiqued in an egalitarian atmosphere that will promote new ways of understanding the problems and opportunities facing southern Africans today. Participants will also receive mentoring and other support for publication, funding applications and networking.
Which Fields are Eligible?
Papers are welcomed in the disciplines covered by JSAS, that is, history, economics, sociology, demography, social anthropology, geography, development studies, administration, law, political science, political economy, international relations, literature, cultural studies and archaeology, as well as the natural sciences in so far as they relate to the human condition.

Who can Apply?
The workshop is open to early-career scholars, broadly defined (PhD students, post-doctoral scholars, lecturers). It is aimed at scholars resident in southern Africa.
Those who have already published two or three articles in international journals, or who have had an article accepted for publication in JSAS, are not eligible.

 Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with some coverage of Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Mauritius.

What is the Benefit of Award?
The workshop aims to provide an opportunity for early career scholars to present papers for discussion and potential publication in JSAS. Participants will bring papers on various aspects of the Southern African region, the Journal’s mandate. The region embraces Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with some coverage of Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Mauritius.
Funding is available for successful applicants who are based at universities or research institutes in the region. We will not be able to pay travel and accommodation costs for scholars based in Lusaka, but can cover local transport costs. Funding is available for childcare, if necessary.

• A covering letter, describing your goals for the workshop
All successful applicants will be required submit a draft article (5,000+ words) and draft presentation for the workshop by 15 July.
The participants will be required to attend online course work ahead of the workshop, to work on revisions of their paper after the workshop, in order to prepare it for publication in JSAS, and to participate in the online training and networking sessions in 2024.
