TheMuseumsLab 2024: Call for Applications funding programme for museum professionals from African and European countries

TheMuseumsLab is a platform for joint learning, exchange and continuing education on the future of museums in both Africa and Europe. The programme has the aim to provide knowledge and competencies, to foster new ideas and approaches as well as to establish close and lasting networks between future shapers of museum concepts on both sides.
The programme consists of three one-week seminar modules (online and onsite in Berlin and Cape Town) lead by prominent African and European experts, a two-week residency at a renowned European partner institution and a co-working phase.
The project was developed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and the Master‘s Programme in Museum Management and Communication at the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Berlin, in close cooperation with the African consultancy group The Advisors.
Several African and European museums as well as other cultural institutions are partners with the programme. The programme is financed by the German Federal Foreign Office and supported by the German Minister of State for Culture and the Media as well as the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
TheMuseumsLab is a pioneering knowledge-exchange programme for joint learning and continuing education concerning the future of museums in Africa and Europe. As a platform for shared expertise and perspectives, TheMuseumsLab aims to build strong and lasting networks to not only change museums, but also to foster social change by addressing urgent issues such as social justice and climate change.
Workshop, Grants
• Professional competencies and experiences: Experience of at least 2 years in a museum, heritage, or art sector.
• Professional Qualification: BA, MA, MSc, or PhD in a museum / heritage / art related field.

• Language skills: Adequate language proficiency in English (written and spoken) is essential in order to participate actively in the programme.
• Commitment to the programme: A prerequisite for the selection of a candidate is her/his/their binding commitment to participate in all phases of The MuseumsLab. The quality of the programme depends on fellow’s participation in all events and continuous work on topics across three modules and intense exchange, both among themselves and with the speakers and lecturers. Employer must provide of letter of consent and approved leave for training purpose.
A committee of internal and external experts will review applications.
