Applications are now open for the 2024 Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Young Researchers Awards. On behalf of its network of national participants, the GBIF Secretariat is pleased to invite nominations for the 2024 Graduate Researchers Award. This annual program intends to support and honor graduate students’ creative research and discoveries in biodiversity informatics whose master’s and doctoral theses depend on GBIF-mediated data.
A pair of €5,000 prizes will be awarded as part of the 2024 program to honor the work of two early-career researchers—ideally, a master’s and a PhD candidate—who receive formal nominations from the heads of delegation or node managers of GBIF Participant countries.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the award, candidates must submit a supporting letter attesting to their enrollment in a graduate program at a university. Furthermore, applicants need to be either
a) citizens of a country participating in GBIF
or
b) students at an institution located in a GBIF participant country
Nominations may originate from the national GBIF delegation or node of the candidate or from the nation of the candidate’s host university.
Award Nomination Packet
Candidates should prepare their proposal and nomination packets to include:
- Research summary (200 words)
- Project description (maximum 5 pages, 12-point Arial) that describes
a. How the research advances biodiversity informatics and/or the conservation of biological diversity.
b. The role of data accessed through GBIF in addressing these questions. Research proposals must specify exactly how GBIF-mobilized data will be used in the study. Students who wish to learn more about GBIF-enabled data can collaborate with members of the Science Committee, their GBIF national node, the GBIF Secretariat, or their academic advisors.
c. The research scope, plan, methodology, relevant literature citations, and timetable.
d. If relevant, a description or an excerpt from a data management plan that specifies how data linked to the research is released or will be prepared for publication through the GBIF network to GBIF.org.
- Curriculum vitae of the student applicant, including full contact information at the home institution.
- Supporting documents
a. A formal letter attesting to the applicant’s status as a student in good standing in the university’s graduate program, written by the mentor or supervisor on faculty.
b. A minimum of one and a maximum of three recommendation letters from reputable scientists working in an area that includes and integrates biodiversity informatics, such as genetics, species composition and traits, biogeography, ecology, systematics, and so on.
Submission process and deadlines
- Students seeking nomination must apply to the Head of Delegation or node manager of a GBIF Voting or Associate Participant country (see the complete list). It is the responsibility of national participants to set their procedures and deadlines for accepting and handling student applications. Graduate students who are interested in being nominated should therefore check out the websites of their respective national GBIF participants or get in touch with the Head of Delegation or node manager directly.
- At the national level, student initiatives are initially evaluated and given priority. It is recommended that GBIF national nodes establish tight collaborations with academic communities and higher education establishments in their respective nations, as well as reach out to relevant research groups and university programs.
- National Heads of Delegation and/or node managers may submit a maximum of two nominees per country to the GBIF Secretariat at gradresearchersaward@GBIF.org by the deadline for submissions on June 24, 2024. Heads of Delegations, in cooperation with node managers, will ensure that submissions are complete and include all the elements listed below. Submissions with incomplete proposals will not be considered.
