University of Portsmouth PhD Scholarship Opportunity: Narcissus

Opportunity for a PhD Scholarship at the University of Portsmouth: Narcissus: Set out in October 2024 on a fully-funded, four-year Ph.D. journey to investigate the developmental and evolutionary aspects of various corona structures in the Amaryllidaceae plant, Narcissus. This outstanding opportunity is part of the SoCoBio DTP industry co-funded Ph.D. program, which is housed in the University of Portsmouth’s School of Biological Sciences and is funded for both UK/EU and international students.

Scholarship Description:

This Ph.D. project explores the rarely studied area of corona structures in Narcissus flowers, highlighting the striking species-to-species variation. To solve the puzzles surrounding corona development, the research combines cooperative efforts, high-throughput DNA sequencing, developmental genetics, and macroevolutionary analyses.

The project’s objectives are to pinpoint important genes, comprehend corona specification, and investigate how hybridization contributes to morphological innovation. The study’s conclusions are not only beneficial from a scientific standpoint but also have real-world applications for the UK’s daffodil breeding industry.

Eligibility for the University of Portsmouth PhD Scholarship Opportunity:

• A good first ecological science degree or a Master’s degree in an appropriate subject.
• Proficiency in English (IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0).
• Interests in botany/horticulture, evolutionary/developmental biology, and high-throughput DNA/RNA sequencing.
• Skills in taxonomy, microscopy, molecular biology, experience with high-throughput data analysis, R/programming.
