PhD Studentship in Skeletal Muscle: A driven individual has an amazing opportunity to become a member of a dynamic research team at Newcastle University. With an emphasis on mitochondrial myopathy, this fully funded PhD studentship investigates the location of mitochondria and nuclear structures in skeletal muscle. The chosen candidate will receive a stipend of £18,622 per year, research cost support, and tuition fees reimbursed at the home rate. We invite you to apply if you have a strong interest in mitochondrial biology, cutting-edge imaging methods, and making significant contributions to science.

Candidates must possess a master’s or undergraduate degree in a pertinent field. An IELTS score of 6.5 is necessary for non-native English speakers, with a minimum of 5.5 in each area. An ATAS clearance certificate may be required for applicants from abroad. Newcastle University is the sponsor of the scholarship (NUAcT).
This PhD study examines structural alterations in patients with mitochondrial myopathy, with a particular emphasis on modified myonuclei organization and nanotunnels. The goal of the research is to develop Correlative Live Light and Electron Microscopy methods to study mitochondria in cells and tissues by utilizing cutting-edge capabilities for bioimaging and electron microscopy. Characterizing the location of myonuclei, refining the CLEM protocol, creating labeling strategies, and carrying out siRNA knockdown experiments are important goals.
