The University of Alberta Scholarships for International Students

The University of Alberta Scholarship for international students provides a great opportunity for students globally to pursue their education at the prestigious school without worrying about funding. Depending on the type of scholarship and the scholarship provider, the scholarship opportunities may cover tuition fees, living expenses, book fees, and accommodation fees amongst other expenses. However, it is important to note that applicants will be considered for the University of Alberta Scholarship after the submission of their admission application.

University of Alberta Scholarships  for International Undergraduate Students

There are two categories of scholarships for international undergraduate students who want to study at the University of Alberta, Canada. They include:

1. Admission-based scholarships

Admission-based scholarships do not require any application process. Rather, students are evaluated when they apply for admission at the school. Eligibility is based on the student’s high school admission average at the time of the admission offer. The school’s scholarship board will assess the student to determine the type of admission-based scholarships they are eligible for. Once the student is successful, they will be contacted immediately. There are various types of admission-based scholarships available and they include: 

  • International admission Scholarship: students are eligible to receive as much as $5,000 CAD, depending on the admission average.
  • Regional Excellence Scholarship: Top students from certain regions are eligible to receive as much as $5,000 CAD, based on admission average
  • Gold Standard Scholarship: The top 5% of students in each faculty can receive as much as $6,000, depending on the admission average.

2. Application-based scholarships

Also, application-based scholarships are open to all types of students. However, unlike admission-based scholarships, students are required to apply for these. Additionally, students must apply to an undergraduate degree program before they can apply for any entrance scholarships. The various types of application-based scholarships at the University of Alberta, Canada include: 

  • President’s International Distinction Scholarship: students with superior admission average and proven leadership qualities entering their first year on a student visa permit are eligible for this scholarship and they can receive as much as $120,000 CAD (during the study over 4 years).
  • International Leader Scholarship: Successful applicants who have an excellent academic record and robust leadership qualities can receive up to $10,000 CAD
  • May Quon Undergraduate Scholarship: Students who have an impressive admission average and self-declared financial are eligible for this scholarship. However, they must be entering their first year in an undergraduate degree on a student visa permit. Chinese or Hong Kong citizens can receive up to $100,000 (payable over 4 years). 
  • University Of Alberta Global Citizen Scholarship For IB Diploma International Students: first-year students with impressive academic records, strong international undergraduate diplomas, and financial assistance to study in Canada on a Study Visa Permit can receive up to $53,000 per year for a maximum period of 4 years.
  • Cora Martinson International Scholarship: Students with outstanding academic performance entering any year of an undergraduate degree program at Augustana Faculty on a Student Visa Permit may be eligible to receive up to $56,000 over 4 years. Selection is based on academic standing, with priority given to students demonstrating financial need.

University of Alberta Scholarships  for International Graduate Students

There are various scholarship opportunities available to international students to pursue their postgraduate studies at the University of Alberta, Canada. Some of these scholarship opportunities include: 

1. Department Awards

In addition, the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) administers over 500 Department Awards, valued in thousands of dollars, endowed or annually funded by donors to the University of Alberta. There are two donor-funded Department Award categories: Department Specific Awards and Inter-Department Awards. The deadline for the interdepartmental awards is June 30 of each competition year while the deadline for the department-specific award is August 31 of each competition year. 2. Mackenzie King Scholarships

Furthermore, the Mackenzie King Scholarships were established in (1874 – 1950) by the late Rt Hon William Lyon Mackenzie King and the trust is administered by a Board of Scholarship Trustees. There are two types of scholarships. They include: 

  • The Mackenzie King Open Scholarship: it is open to graduates (meaning holders of a degree) of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) graduate study (master’s or doctoral) in any field, in Canada or elsewhere. The scholarship value is $14,000 CAD
  • The Mackenzie King Travelling Scholarship: It is open to graduates (meaning holders of a degree) of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) graduate study (master’s or doctoral), in the United States or the United Kingdom, of international relations or industrial relations (including the international or industrial relations aspects of law, history, politics and economics). The scholarship value is $15,500 CAD.

3. Thesis Completion Awards

Also, these awards recognize outstanding theses at the master’s and doctoral levels. Students must have completed, or are nearing completion of their graduate degree program. The different types of thesis completion awards available include: 

  • Governor General’s Gold Medal
  • CAGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Awards
  • WAGS/ProQuest Innovation and Technology Awards
  • WAGS/ProQuest Distinguished Master’s Thesis Awards (STEM and Non-STEM)
  • WAGS/ProQuest Distinguished Master’s Thesis and/or Final Master’s Capstone Project Award in the Creative, Visual and Performing Arts

4. University of Alberta Graduate Entrance Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is for the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) to provide funding and support for new graduate students whose admissions were impressive by their Department. The stipend value is $17,500 Master’s; and $21,000 Doctoral. Students must have a Canadian bank account and Canadian address to receive the award.

5. Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship (AI GSS)

Additionally, another scholarship for international students to study at the University of Alberta is Alberta Advanced Education, in partnership with Alberta Innovates, which supports academically superior graduate students pursuing research Masters or Doctoral degrees at an Alberta university. The Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarships program (GSS) focuses on Emerging Technology Areas important to Alberta, such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMM). These areas align with the innovation priority areas of Environment, Energy, Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Health. The scholarship value is as follows: 

  • Master’s full value: $26,000
  • PhD full value: $31,000
  • Top-up value: $12,000

6. Killam Trust Scholarships

The $400 million Killam Trusts are among Canada’s largest and most prestigious endowments for scholarly activities. The Killam Bequest has provided more than $60 million to the University of Alberta through three programs administered by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS). The scholarships offered include: 

  • Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship
  • Dorothy J Killam Memorial Graduate Prizes
  • Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring
  • Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Dorothy J Killam Memorial Postdoctoral Fellow Prize

7. Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize

The Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize is awarded in direct recognition of excellence in research at the doctoral level; it acknowledges outstanding accomplishment and potential in pursuit of new knowledge. The Prize is funded by an endowment created by the University of Alberta in honor of Dr. Andrew Stewart, President of the University from 1950 to 1959, and under whose administration the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies was created. The scholarship is valued at $5,000. There are no citizenship restrictions for this scholarship, however, applicants must be full-time doctoral students. 

Eligibility Criteria For The University Of Alberta Scholarships for International Students

Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria to apply for these scholarships: 

  • Applicants who have completed High School degrees are eligible to apply for Bachelors/ Undergraduate degree programs
  • Applicants with Masters Degree programs at the University of Alberta are eligible to apply for Ph.D. Course.
  • Applicant must have an outstanding educational record to apply at the University of Alberta.
