Application for the IEG Fellowships for Doctoral Study 2024 is open to PhD students from Germany and abroad who have at least a Masters level degree in history, theology, or another discipline that works historically.
The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz is an independent non-profit research institution that is dedicated to conducting academic research on European history. As a research institution that is not part of a university, the Institute does not hold any examinations and does not award any academic qualifications. The Institute awards research scholarships and fellowships to academics who are pursuing their doctorate in European history from both Germany and abroad. These fellowships are completed under the guidance of the fellowship holder’s supervisor at their home university. In general, applicants must have been pursuing their doctorate for no more than three years at the time of the application deadline, although exceptions to this rule may be granted in certain circumstances.

The IEG Fellowships for Doctoral Study 2024 offer a monthly stipend of €1,350 to successful applicants. These fellowships are funded jointly by the federal and state governments and are only intended to be used for the research project described in the application at the IEG. Therefore, no other form of employment or funding can be pursued during the fellowship’s duration.
If the fellowship holder’s partner accompanies them to Mainz and earns no more than €450 per month, they may be eligible for a family allowance. Please indicate in your application if your partner will be joining you in Mainz.
