Applications are currently open for the fully-funded British Council Research Fellowship Program for the year 2024. The fellowship program is being offered in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh. The British Council Research Fellowship is open to postdoctoral researchers from any country that is a recipient of Official Development Assistance (ODA) and where the British Council operates (Please see the ‘Eligibility’ section below for more details). 

Also, the program will award two 12-month fellowships that will commence in January 2025. The fellows will spend the initial ten months of their fellowship program at IASH, followed by up to two months in their home countries to focus on knowledge exchange and dissemination in partnership with the British Council.

  • The program is a 12-month fellowship, fellows will spend the first ten months of their fellowships at IASH, followed by up to two months based in their home countries

Eligibility Criteria for the Fully Funded British Council Research Fellowship

Candidates should meet the following requirements to be eligible for the fellowship program: 

  • A research and/or professional background and academic record that relates to the broad thematic remit of the program, outlined above.
  • A research proposal with clear potential to support the British Council’s objectives for the program is outlined above.
  • Demonstrable experience in engaging non-academic audiences and stakeholders in research (e.g. through engagement with policymakers, practitioners, artists, or other public audiences).
  • A clear commitment to knowledge exchange and dissemination as part of the fellowship and beyond the timeframe of the fellowship itself, based on the networks, insights, and learnings developed through their research.
  • Be qualified to undertake postdoctoral-level research for the fellowship.
  • Be within seven years of completion of your PhD.
  • Be based in an ODA recipient country in which the British Council operates.
  • Should have research that is aligned with the overarching vision of the British Council
