The University of Bath is an institution that encourages athletes to reach their full potential. Being the first institution in the UK to grant athletic scholarships, it is dedicated to giving students the finest possible environment in which to reach their greatest potential. These scholarships, which offer financial support to athletes in order to foster their development and recognize their ongoing progress, are in line with the university’s Student Performance Sport and Breakthrough Programs.

Past top athletes to have received Sports Scholarship support at the University of Bath are London 2012 Olympic silver medalists Michael Jamieson (swimming) and Samantha Murray (modern pentathlon), PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic bronze- medalist Dom Parsons (skeleton) and Tokyo 2020 champions Joe Choong (modern pentathlon) and Anna Hopkin (swimming).

Among those to have achieved international sporting success while supported by a scholarship is double Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champion Tom Dean, who studies Mechanical Engineering and trains on campus with the Aquatics GB Bath Performance Centre.

Eligibility and criteria

To be eligible for a scholarship, student-athletes must:

Meet the criteria of the Breakthrough Programme and Sport Scholarship Specific Criteria
Be completing a minimum of 30 credits at the University of Bath.
Not be serving a period of ineligibility due to an anti-doping rule violation.
Have a clean conduct record per Student Regulation 7 (Disciplinary Regulations for Students).

For the 2024/25 academic year, we anticipate the following sport scholarships with their eligibility criteria to be awarded:

Indicate your interest in a Sport Scholarship by selecting “Yes” to question number 14 on the form.

How are Applicants Selected?

Shortlisting based on criteria and supporting statements.
Informal interviews with the Performance Sport Officer and Head of Performance Sport in the week commencing October 7, 2024.
Final selection panel meets before the end of October, comprising key university and sports officials.
