The application period for the Fall 2024 program will close on June 16, 2024. Non-US citizens must already be authorized to work in the US through citizenship, permanent residency, or an existing visa sponsored by a university or other valid third party, as the program does not sponsor visas.

The East-West Center in Washington (EWCW) offers a chance each semester for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates, to gain first-hand training experience at a US-Indo-Pacific research and education organization in Washington, DC.
We strive to provide participants with a broad range of education and training opportunities during their time with EWCW. These may include acquiring and analyzing large datasets for our Asia Matter for America publications, writing articles for AsiaMattersforAmerica.org, attending webinars or seminars, and delivering briefs.
Applicants typically have a strong interest in US-Indo-Pacific relations and may be studying international relations, Asia studies, international economics, international political economy, public policy, international business, journalism, or other similar areas of study. However, all students and recent graduates who are interested in learning more about US-Indo-Pacific relations are encouraged to apply.

What is the Benefit of Award?
Although not mandatory, the following skills and experiences are advantageous for applicants:
- Research experience with open-source data and proficiency in Excel.
- Ability to analyze quantitative data and clearly communicate findings.
- Experience in the Indo-Pacific region, either through living, studying, or research.
- Tracking and analyzing news from multiple media sources.
- Interest in interpreting complex international relations topics into local contexts.
- Skills in creating graphs, charts, and infographics for both online and print.
- Basic understanding of economic data analysis, including FDI and Greenfield investments.
- Fluency in an Asian language.
- Experience in writing policy analyses, briefs, press releases, or other professional communications.
- Public relations and brand management experience.
Requirements of the East-West Center Washington Young Professionals Scholarship Program
Participants are expected to commit to full-time participation (40 hours per week), with a monthly stipend of $2,000 (subject to taxes and withholding). Part-time participation is prorated accordingly. While residence in the DC metro area is preferred, applicants from other locations are also encouraged to apply. All participants must attend at least one weekly Zoom meeting, dedicate 20–40 hours per week to the program, and be available during Eastern Time working hours (9 a.m.–5 p.m.).
