Tell Me About The Fully Funded Bertha Challenge Fellowship 2025

The sixth Bertha Challenge is an opportunity for activists and investigative journalists to spend a year working on one pressing social justice challenge and to deliver a body of work at the end of the Fellowship year. Successful applicants will receive non-residential paid Fellowships and project budgets to work independently and together to:

Investigate the causes of and solutions to the annual Bertha Challenge question.

Amplify their findings to a wider targeted audience.

Connect with diverse stakeholders for information, support, and sustainable impact. 

Also, the sixth Bertha Challenge will begin in January 2025 with a focus on farming and the climate crisis.

Who can Apply for the Fully Funded Bertha Challenge Fellowship 2025

Activists applying for the fellowship should have:

  • Minimum five years of experience in collaborating with activists, grassroots movements, and community organizations.
  • Extensive networks within their city, country, or region, including relationships with social movements, NGOs, academics, journalists, and progressive government officials.
  • Proficiency in creating organizing tools and educational materials like training courses, publications, films, podcasts, etc.
  • Competence in utilizing research, media, and legal strategies for advocacy purposes.

Additionally, applicants for the fellowship should be mid-career investigative journalists with at least five years of experience and a notable history in investigative reporting. They should have demonstrated interest and prior involvement in tackling the Bertha Challenge question, showcasing their ability to collaborate with various stakeholders such as affected communities, social movements, NGOs, academics, and scientists. Proficiency in investigative journalism and research, coupled with a thorough grasp of the political dynamics and pertinent laws, is essential. Candidates should also possess the ability to work independently and have affiliation with a media outlet willing to publish or broadcast the outcomes of their work during the Bertha Challenge.

What is the Benefit of the Fully Funded Bertha Challenge Fellowship
