The scholarship was established in 2009 and is funded by a retired University of Auckland staff member.

The purpose of this scholarship is to enable students who have obtained a degree in Theological and Religious Studies from Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, or another approved theological institution to enroll in postgraduate study at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, or an approved overseas theological institution, and thus accept opportunities that they might not otherwise be able to undertake.
