Tell Me About Sasol Mining Bursary:

STEM bursaries

The Sasol Mining offers an all-inclusive bursary to talented individuals who are planning to study full-time towards an undergraduate degree to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers. Priority will be given to degree studies that are in line with future capabilities (Green Economy and Digitalisation), which include disciplines such as Engineering, Information Technology, Data Sciences, Agricultural Science, Environmental Sciences, Medical Sciences and Construction & Manufacturing among others.

Non-STEM bursaries

These bursaries are reserved only for qualifying students from Sasol’s fence line communities (municipalities / districts around Sasol plants / operations); children of Sasol Khanyisa shareholders; and children of Sasol employees, wishing to study towards non-STEM qualifications.

  1. These bursary opportunities are limited to South African citizens (by birth only), who are / will be pursuing degree studies at a public South African University or University of Technology.
  2. The Sasol Foundation is also offering STEM and Non-STEM bursaries exclusively for qualifying children of Sasol employees, Sasol Khanyisa/Inzalo shareholders as well as applicants from Sasol fence-line communities.
  3. Sasol Foundation reserves the right to select qualifying individuals based on academic performance, household income, acceptance to University/University of Technology as well South African citizenship.
  4. Please note that applicants who are in Grade 12 this year, must submit the Grade 11 (final year end) results. All other applicants must submit end of year results of whichever year they have completed.  (For example Grade 12 or those who were enrolled at a Higher Learning Institution must use their end of year results to apply.)
  5. No postgraduate bursaries for 2025 academic year.

Which Fields are Eligible?

  • A full-time undergraduate Degree to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and non-STEM careers.
  • A limited number of non-STEM bursaries are reserved only for qualifying children of Sasol employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo Shareholders or candidates from Sasol fence-line communities.

Who can Apply for Sasol Mining Bursaries?

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen (by birth only)
  • You must reside in one of the following Sasol Mining Fenceline communities:
  • Mpumalanga – Gert Sibande District – Secunda Fenceline:
    • Govan Mbeki Municipality (Bethal, Brendan Village, Charl Cilliers, eMbalenhle, eMzinoni (Bethal), Eendragt, Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Lebogang, Leslie, Secunda, Trichardt)
    • Lekwa Local Municipality (Holmdene, Morgenzon, Standerton, Sakhile, Sivukile, Tutukani, Tutuka)
    • Dipaleseng Local Municipality (Balfour, Ekanini, Greylingstad, Grootvlei, Nthoroane, Nthorwane, Siyathemba, Val)
    • Msukaligwa Local Municipality (Davel, Ermelo, Wesselton)
  • Nkangala District (Mpumalanga) – Secunda Fenceline:
    • eMalahleni (Ga-Nala, Kriel, Ogies, Phola, Rietkuil, Thubelihle, van Dyksdrift, Wilge, Witbank / eMalahleni)
  • Fezile Dabi District (Free State) – Sasolburg Fenceline:
    • Metsimaholo Local Municipality (Coalbrook, Deneysvilles, Metsimaholo, Oranjeville, Refengkgotso, Sasolburg, Taaibos, Vaalpark, Zamdela)
    • Ngwathe Local Municipality (Edenville, Mokwallo, Parys, Tumahole, Vredefort)
  • Sedibeng District (Gauteng) – Sasolburg Fenceline:
    • Emfuleni Local Municipality (Boipatong, Bophelong, Evaton, Lochvaal Barrage, Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging)
    • Lesedi Local Municipality (Devon)
  • You must have completed Matric
  • You must be studying full-time, towards one of the undergraduate qualifications listed above (the bursary will NOT cover studies towards a dual/ combined/ hybrid degree program)
  • You must be in your 1st to 4th year of study in 2024
  • You must be studying studying at a recognised and accredited University or University of Technology in South Africa (the bursary will NOT cover studies at UNISA)
  • You must be able to complete your studies within a maximum period of 5 years (from start date to completion date of your degree)
  • BEng and BSc Eng students: you must have achieved the following minimum academic results:
    • Level 6 (70 – 79%) for Mathematics (not Mathematics Literacy)
    • Level 6 (70 – 79%) for Physical Science
    • Level 5 (60 – 69%) for English First Additional language OR Level 5 (60 – 69%) for English home language OR Level 4 (50 – 59%) for English Second Additional language
  • BEng Tech students: you must have achieved the following minimum academic results:
    • Level 5 (60 – 69%) for Mathematics (not Mathematics Literacy)
    • Level 5 (60 – 69%) for Physical Science
    • Level 5 (60 – 69%) for English First Additional language OR Level 5 (60 – 69%) for English home language OR Level 4 (50 – 59%) for English Second Additional language
  • Mine Surveying students: you must pursue studies at the University of  Johannesburg only
  • Geology students: you must intend on completing an Honours degree

Steps to follow when completing the bursary application form.

New User

  • Click here to apply or visit the About Us page, find the Now Open block and select Click Here to Apply
  • Select Register
  • Fill in the required details
  • Click on – Create New Account
  • You will receive an activation email, click on Activate Account
  • It will lead you to screen to verify your email and to create a password
  • Upon creation, you will be back on the login page
  • Enter your email and password
  • You have logged in
  • Click on South African Bursary Application (Top Left Corner)
  • Click on Undergraduate Applications
  • Supply required information
  • Read the disclaimer
  • Accept the disclaimer to proceed by clicking on the white button turning it blue
  • You can exit the page once you receive a response on your application (which will also be emailed to you)

  • Supply login information
  • The form will take you to the section you have not completed

Forgot Password

  • Click on Request New Password
  • Supply email address you registered with
  • A password reset will be mailed to original registered email address
  • Once you receive your password via email, continue with login process
