The New Zealand Government, through the New Zealand International Development Cooperation Programme, is offering limited scholarships for professional development online.

The New Zealand (NZ) Government offers scholarships to professionals from eligible countries to learn new skills in Aotearoa New Zealand. In 2024 and 2025, we are offering a small number of scholarships for professional development studying either online or in New Zealand. These scholarships are managed by Skills Group.

The online course is run part time over a four-week period, consisting of two three-hour sessions per week and will be run by the University of Auckland’s Public Policy Institute. While the course does not constitute a formal tertiary qualification it will provide scholars with unique insights into New Zealand approaches and best practice in each sectoral study area.

Which Fields are Eligible?

The Trade Policy is a four week online part-time course and it will commence on Monday 16 September 2024, completing on Friday 18 October 2024.

Who can Apply?

  • Citizens from South Africa and other eligible countries who are currently in middle and senior management positions;
  • Officials with at least 5 years’ work experience in the relevant course sector;
  • Participants with basic level of computer literacy and numeracy;
  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of the start of the scholarship; 
  • From the date of application, have lived in the country of citizenship for the last two years or more;
  • Exception for diplomatic corps and their family: Be a member of the diplomatic corps or a dependant of a member of the diplomatic corps, living outside their own country;
  • Not be a citizen or permanent resident of any of the following countries:
    New Zealand, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, any European Union country, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Norway, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom or the United States of America; 
  • Not be currently serving in the military;
  • Within the last five years, not have had a New Zealand Scholarship terminated.

You must also acknowledge and agree that: 

  • You have received endorsement from employer to attend this training programme and that;
  • Meet the academic entry requirements (including English language requirements) for planned training programme.

ASEAN and Timor-Leste: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Timor-Leste, and Viet Nam.  

Scholarships are offered to citizens of Singapore and Brunei for the Public Sector Leadership (mid-level) course.
Scholarships are offered to citizens of Singapore and Brunei for the Food and Agribusiness Value Chains courses.

Pacific: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna

Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Angola, Botswana, eSwatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Latin America and the Caribbean: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Applications for this short course must be submitted through the application portal accessible via the Skills Consulting Group website.

Required documents:

If you are selected for a scholarship, you will need to provide copies of the following documents before taking up your scholarship:  

  • Certified copies of the personal pages of your passport (or an alternative form of photo identification if you do not hold a passport). 
  • Certified copies of your International English proficiency test results, such as International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or equivalent, from within the last 18 months.
