The Leiden University Excellence Scholarships 20024/25 is for excellent students joining a full-time Leiden University Master’s degree program – except LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at Leiden Law School.

Who can Apply?

Also, interested candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • LExS is primarily open to outstanding international students who are not citizens of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
  • Applicants must have applied for admission to a Master’s program at Leiden University. The scholarship is typically available for Master’s programs offered at the university.
  • Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic performance in their previous education. This usually means having a high GPA or equivalent academic achievements.
  • Applicants must often provide a strong motivation letter, outlining their academic and personal achievements, goals, and reasons for applying for the LExS. They may also need to demonstrate leadership potential and extracurricular involvement.
  • Prospective students must submit their application for the LExS before the specified deadline. Late applications are generally not considered.

How are Applicants Selected?

The faculty selection committees will nominate their LExS recipients within 6 weeks of the LExS deadline.  Additionally, all applicants will receive an email notifying them whether they have been awarded a LExS:  

  • At the end of November (for programs starting in February)
  • At the end of April (for study programs starting in September)

What is the Benefit of the Award?

The LExS is awarded for the duration of the study program. There are three available levels of awards:

  • € 10,000 of the tuition fee
  • € 15,000 of the tuition fee
  • Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee

The LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients must still submit ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application.

How Long Will the Award Last?

The award lasts for the duration of the study.

  • Apply online for admission to a Master’s program at Leiden University and pay the application fee if applicable.
  • It can take up to 2 days to create/submit an application for admission, so start your application well before the LExS deadline.
  • After submitting your application for admission, return to the Apply screen in your online application and click on Scholarships.
  • If eligible, the LExS will be visible in the scholarships section.
  • If you cannot see the LExS, you have either not yet submitted your application for admission or are not eligible.
  • Indicate that you want to apply for the LExS and upload your LExS motivation letter (PDF file, max. 500 words).
  • Submit your scholarship application before the LExS deadline.
  • After submitting your scholarship application, you cannot make changes to it online or by sending additional items by email.
  • If applying for more than one study program/specialization, submit a separate LExS application and motivation letter for each.
