SAAFoST Foundation Bursary for South African Matriculants 2025

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation invites matriculants to apply for bursaries in Food Science and Technology. These bursaries are awarded based on academic merit, employment equity, and demonstrated potential.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Excellence: Preference for matriculants excelling academically or demonstrating potential.
  • Admission Requirements: Must have a Further Education & Training Certificate (General) or equivalent with at least a rating of 5 in Mathematics and Physical Science. Life Science is recommended.
  • Study Enrollment: Must be enrolled for a full-time undergraduate degree or diploma in Food Science and Technology at a South African tertiary institution.
  • Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen residing in South Africa for at least 3 years prior to application.
  • Personal Statement: Must provide a 1 A4 page personal statement on how education in food science and technology will positively impact their life and the scientific community.
  • Reference Letter: A reference letter from someone who has known the applicant in a learning capacity for at least 3 years.
  • Duration: Must complete the chosen study programme within:
    • Undergraduate Degree (up to BSc Hons) – 4 years
    • B. Tech Degree – 5 years
    • Diploma – 4 years

Bursary Package

  • Tuition Fees: Financial assistance covers actual tuition fees up to R40,000 per annum, paid directly to the institution in two installments, subject to satisfactory results.

Bursary Conditions

  • Contract: Students must sign a contract agreeing to the bursary conditions.
  • SAAFoST Membership: Must register as members of SAAFoST within the first three months of registration and remain active members.
  • Reports: Provide a six-monthly report and exam results to the SAAFoST Foundation.
  • Conversion to Loan: The bursary may convert into a loan if the student terminates or interrupts their studies, fails to complete within the prescribed period, or fails any year or semester without formal permission from the Foundation.

Application Process for the SAAFoST Foundation Bursary

  • Documents Required:
    • A head & shoulders passport-size photograph
    • Certified copy of ID book or RSA passport
    • Certified copy of Grade 11 final examinations and latest Grade 12 examinations with Achievement Rating of 5 or 60-69% in Mathematics and Physical Science
    • Personal Statement
    • Reference Letter
  • Application Form: Download in Adobe PDF or MS Word format.
  • Submission: Completed applications must be emailed to the SAAFoST Membership Development Officer at irene@saafost.org.za.
