The University of Cape Town’s HUMA UCT CCNY Africa AI Ethics Visiting Research Fellowship (VRF) provides scholars with the chance to advance their research projects while engaging with the vibrant academic community at HUMA and UCT.

When is Application Deadline:

  • May 10 for Term 3 stays from July-September 2024.
  • April 30 for Term 4 stays from October-December 2024.
  • August 31 for Term 1 stays from February-April 2025.

The HUMA UCT CCNY Africa AI Ethics Visiting Research Fellowship (VRF) is a residential fellowship offered by the Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA) at the University of Cape Town. Supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, it aims to support Africa-based Early Career Researchers in the field of Artificial Intelligence, with a particular focus on AI ethics, social justice, and African epistemologies. The fellowship provides an opportunity for scholars to pursue their research projects while engaging with the academic community at HUMA and UCT.

Which Fields are Eligible:

  • All academic disciplines researching Artificial Intelligence, particularly those focusing on AI ethics, social justice, and African epistemologies.

Type:

  • Visiting Research Fellowship.

Who can Apply for the Apply for The University of Cape Town Visiting Research Fellowship (VRF) 2024:

  • Full-time Africa-based Early-Mid Career Researchers employed by an African university.
  • Africa-based Postdoctoral researchers (within 10 years of PhD completion).

How are Applicants Selected:

  • Selection is based on relevance, academic excellence, originality, interdisciplinarity, quality, intended outputs, and the feasibility of the proposed research project.

Which Countries are Eligible:

  • Applicants must be based in an African Union member state and have lived in Africa for at least two of the last four years.

Where will the Award be Taken:

  • At HUMA, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

How Many Awards?

  • Seven (7) fellowships will be awarded.

  • Return airfare (economy class).
  • Daily stipend/subsistence allowance for days spent in Cape Town.
  • Travel health insurance.
  • Accommodation at All Africa House on the UCT campus.

How Long Will the Award Last:

  • Up to a maximum of three months.

  • Submit the following documents in PDF format to huma@uct.ac.za:
    1. Letter of motivation.
    2. Curriculum vitae and list of publications (if available).
    3. Brief description of the proposed research project (5 pages).
    4. Proposed co-host department and mentor.
    5. Copies of university certificates and proof of language competence.
    6. Two recommendation/reference letters.
    7. A confirmation from your university (HoD, Dean, DVC) showing support for your application.
    8. A support letter from the Host Department at UCT.
    9. A confirmation and support letter from your host mentor at UCT.
