The Alicia Patterson fellowships are open only to U.S. citizens who are full-time print journalists, or to non-U.S. citizens who work full-time for U.S. print publications, either in America or abroad. Freelancers are welcome to apply. The fellowship provides a stipend of $40,000 for twelve months or $20,000 for six months. - The stipend must cover travel and research costs.
- Fellows are responsible for paying taxes on the stipend, usually through quarterly payments to the IRS.
- Applicants must submit a budget detailing how they will use the stipend.
- Employed applicants may receive additional financial support from their news organizations to cover the difference between the stipend and their salary, but this does not impact the selection process.
