How are Applicants Selected?
In general, the fellowship will be awarded to individuals with challenging and innovative research projects of high academic quality with a thematic focus on sustainable governance through a highly competitive, strictly merit-based selection process (only one fellowship can be awarded in this funding period). The most important selection criteria are the academic excellence of both the applicant and the project proposal. We encourage collaborative work and expect candidates to have peer-reviewed articles (at least 5 within the last 10 years; including at least one with or as a co-author).
Applicants are encouraged to learn about the University of Freiburg’s profile of particular research strengths: https://uni-freiburg.de/research/research-profile/. It is essential to identify an academic partner at the University of Freiburg and obtain a letter of cooperation by the academic partner who will support the project during the stay in Freiburg; this letter has to be included as part of the application. Members of Freiburg University’s Africa Centre for Transregional Research (ACT) may be particularly suitable (but not obligatory) partners providing a letter of cooperation (https://act.uni-freiburg.de/en/who-we-are-1/persons)
Applicants must have at least (a) six months’ research experience after their PhD at academic institution(s) in a country different from the country of their first academic degree AND (b) have received a Master/PhD or received tenure or equivalent in an African country.
