What is the British Army Recruitment for Commonwealth Citizens?
The British Army is inviting applications from Commonwealth citizens, including Nigerians, for various roles starting from 19th August 2024. This recruitment phase acknowledges the crucial contributions of Commonwealth soldiers to the British Army.

Roles Available:
- Musician
- Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer
- Royal Engineers Technician and Tradesman
- Paratrooper
Eligibility Criteria:
Soldiers:
- Age: Minimum 16 years (applications start at 15 years and 7 months; assessment begins at 15 years and 9 months).
- Maximum Age: Must enlist before 36 years.
- Special Requirement: Must be linked to the Recruit Bounty Referral Scheme, except for musicians who need to meet specific musical standards.
Officers:
- Age: 18 to 29 years (higher age limits apply for specialist roles like doctors; exceptions for candidates over 30 on a case-by-case basis).
- Qualifications:
- 35 ALIS points from 7 subjects (including C/4 in English Language, Maths, and Science or a foreign language).
- 72 UCAS Tariff points from 3 subjects.
Medical Screening:
- Sickle Cell Screening: Candidates from Commonwealth countries will undergo screening for Sickle Cell traits. Those identified as higher risk will need a diagnostic blood test before entry fitness tests.
Fitness and Lifestyle Requirements:
- Tests Include: Multistage Fitness Test (Beep Test), Seated Ball Throw, and Mid Thigh Pull.
- Lifestyle: Guidance provided to achieve required fitness levels; emphasis on quitting smoking and maintaining a balanced diet.
Tattoos and Piercings:
- Tattoos: Acceptable if not offensive, obscene, or visible on a passport photo. Hand and neck tattoos are allowed, but head and face tattoos are not.
- Piercings: Large flesh tunnels may disqualify applicants; all jewelry must be removed during physical activities.
Criminal Convictions:
- Disclosure: Must disclose any unspent convictions. The British Army takes a rehabilitation approach to criminal records.
Joining the Army Cadet Force:
- Opportunity for Younger Individuals: Offers military-themed activities, sports, outdoor adventures, and qualifications like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Application Process and Timeline:
- Travel: Candidates must be prepared to travel to the UK for further assessment in October and November 2024.
- Basic Training: Scheduled to commence between January and March 2025.
