Each year, Gates Cambridge offers 80 full-cost scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

When is the Application Deadline:

  • For US Citizens: Wednesday 16 October 2024 (Time 12:00, noon in local US time zone)
  • For International Students: Dependent on your course—either 3 December 2024 or 7 January 2025

Tell Me About The Gates Cambridge Scholarship:

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship program for international students to pursue a master’s or PhD at the University of Cambridge in the UK. Established in October 2000 through a donation of US$ 210 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, it is one of the most prestigious scholarships available for postgraduate study.

For the academic year 2025-2026, Gates Cambridge will offer 80 full-cost scholarships to exceptional candidates from outside the UK. Approximately two-thirds of these scholarships will be awarded to PhD students, with around 25 awards available in the US round and 55 in the international round.

Which Fields are Eligible?

The scholarship is available for all the postgraduate courses offered by the University of Cambridge, with the exception of:

  • Any Undergraduate degree such as BA (undergraduate) or BA affiliated (a second BA)
  • Business Doctorate (BusD)
  • Master of Business (MBA)
  • Master of Finance (MFin)
  • PGCE
  • MBBChir Clinical Studies
  • MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
  • Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
  • Part-time degrees
  • Non-degree courses

Who can Apply?

To qualify for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.

  • A maintenance allowance of £18,744 per annum for a single student.
  • One economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course.

  • Academic development funding of up to £2,000 for attending conferences and courses.
  • Family allowance of up to £15,612 for two or more children.
  • Fieldwork funding to cover maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD.
  • Maternity/Paternity funding for up to 6 months with maintenance allowance.
  • Hardship funding for unforeseen difficulties.

How Long Will the Award Last?

  • Two years for master’s programs.
  • Three years for PhD programs, with a possibility of extension to four years.

To apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, follow these steps:

  1. Apply for admission to a course and a college place at the University of Cambridge.
  2. Complete the Gates Cambridge section of the funding application.
  3. Create an account on the University of Cambridge’s application portal.
  4. Provide your personal information and submit the required documents:
    • Gates Cambridge Statement (up to 500 words)
    • CV/Resume
    • Research proposal (for PhD applicants)
    • Gates reference (in addition to two academic references for admission)
