The Climate Change AI Grants program, supported by the Quadrature Climate Foundation, Google DeepMind, and Global Methane Hub, offers funding of up to USD 1.4 million for projects that operate at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and climate change. This funding aims to foster innovative solutions to climate-related challenges through the use of AI and machine learning. The Canada Hub of Future Earth serves as the fiscal sponsor for the program, ensuring effective financial management and support for the funded projects.

Who Can Apply For The Climate Change AI Innovation Grants 2024?

Also, applicants must take note of the following:

  • The Principal Investigator (PI) must be affiliated with an accredited university in one of the 38 OECD Member Countries and be eligible to hold grants under their name at their accredited university.
  • Co-investigators can be located outside OECD Member countries and can be affiliated with non-research institutions.
  • Multi-country and multi-sectoral collaborations are encouraged.
  • Co-investigators cannot be affiliated with an organization on the Consolidated Screening List or in a sanctioned country.
  • Current members of the Climate Change AI Board of Directors and staff are not eligible to apply as a PI or receive funds towards their salary.
  • Program Chairs and Meta-Reviewers for this grant may not apply or receive funds; however, Reviewers may apply, with conflicts of interest managed during the review process.
  • Projects that are currently funded by other grant programs are not eligible. If other grant proposals for the same project have been submitted or are under consideration, the relationship between those proposals and the current one must be clearly explained.
  • No aspect of the project should receive double funding from other funding bodies if selected for this grant.

How are Applicants Selected?

Furthermore, applicants must take note of the following: 

  • Climate Relevance: Projects must have a clear link to climate change mitigation or adaptation, with the relationship explicitly stated.
  • AI/ML Relevance: Projects should effectively use AI or ML, either as a central or supporting component and will not be penalized if other methods are better suited.
  • Dataset Requirements: Proposed datasets or simulators must enable further impactful work and comply with FAIR Data Principles.
  • Pathway to Impact: Proposals should outline a plan for deploying results to aid climate mitigation or adaptation.
  • Ethical Considerations: Proposals must discuss ethical implications, including stakeholder impact, equity, and potential risks.
  • Feasibility: The project’s scope must align with the proposed timeline and budget.
  • The expertise of the Team: Teams should have relevant expertise in climate change and AI/ML; interdisciplinary and diverse teams are encouraged.
  • Deployment Partners: Projects with organizations that can help deploy the work effectively will be favoured.
  • Under-Funded Areas: Priority is given to projects that may not typically receive funding, including interdisciplinary and underserved stakeholder projects.
  • Equity Considerations: Projects should incorporate equity considerations, such as through the choice of problem or stakeholders involved.
