The IUSSP Laureate Award honours exceptional achievements in the population field. Outstanding contributions to the advancement of population sciences through research, training, policy advice and science communication, as well as distinguished services rendered to the population community and the Union, will be taken into consideration for this Award. Nominees should exemplify the highest standards of professional conduct.

Also, applicants are to meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Nominees should have made exceptional contributions to population sciences through research, training, policy advice, or science communication.
- Nominees should have provided distinguished service to the population community and the IUSSP.
- Nominees must exemplify the highest standards of professional conduct.
- Candidates do not need to be members of the IUSSP.
- Self-nominations are not permitted.
- Members of the current IUSSP Council are not eligible for nomination or for providing supporting statements.
- Nominated candidates remain eligible for up to four years from their initial nomination.
