Tell Me About The Google News Initiative JournalismAI Innovation Challenge:

The JournalismAI Innovation Challenge, backed by the Google News Initiative, provides funding to news publishers to tackle misinformation, test new formats on mobile, video, and audio, and find ways to grow subscriptions and explore diverse revenue streams. Furthermore, this nine-month program is developed by the JournalismAI team at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) with support from the Google News Initiative.

Who can Apply For The Google News Initiative JournalismAI Innovation Challenge?

Also, applicants are to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Government-owned or politically affiliated entities cannot apply.
  • Applicants must have a verifiable digital presence, like a website with journalistic content, and have been active for at least 12 months before applying.
  • Applicants must be able to implement and measure the impact of the grant within 9 months.
  • The grant is not for reporting or storytelling; eligible projects must use AI to address these areas:
  • Combat misinformation and disinformation.
  • Try new formats to engage audiences through mobile, video, or audio.
  • Find ways to grow subscriptions and explore new revenue streams.
  • Applicants must be willing to share insights, collaborate with other grantees, and submit a final performance report.
