โ€œFuture Cities Go Glocalโ€, a new initiative by the Aspen Institute Germany, acknowledges cities as both global and local actors. The project seeks to enhance citiesโ€™ ability to address critical issues like climate change, energy security, migration, social justice, and inadequate infrastructure. The aim is to promote exchange between city stakeholders from Berlin, New Delhi, Nairobi, and Mexico City in order to share best practices, create new networks, and develop policy recommendations for sustainable and inclusive urban development in the face of diverse challenges. The project aims to strengthen the role of cities as global actors in shaping the transition to a just and sustainable society and realizing the vision of fair and resilient cities while fostering a shared understanding of the future of urban environments.

Who can Apply For The Aspen Initiative Future Cities Go Glocal Initiative?

Also, applicants are to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • be city stakeholders in business, politics, city administration or planning, culture, arts, sports, media, architecture, academia, or other fields relevant to urban life;
  • live or work in New Delhi, Nairobi, Berlin, or Mexico City;
  • be able to participate in the development and publication of recommendations in the form of a report and a final event;
  • have expertise on city-related topics, climate change, energy security, sustainability and/or digitalization;
  • have sufficient knowledge of English; and
  • be interested in international exchange.

What is the Benefit of the Award?

Additionally, applicants will benefit the following:

  • Engage with international peers and leaders in the field through both in-person and virtual programming.
  • Participate in interactive virtual meetings between November 2024 and May 2025 (approximately 9 meetings, each lasting 1-2 hours).
  • Attend a 3.5-day in-person meeting in Berlin, Germany, in March 2025 (travel time not included).
  • Collaborate on a joint publication of policy recommendations, to be released in May 2025.
  • Take part in a virtual closing event in May/June 2025.
  • Gain insights into urban practices and policies in various cities, with opportunities to conduct site visits to observe best practices and innovative solutions.
  • Explore possibilities for intercontinental collaboration.
  • Actively contribute to the development of policy recommendations, which will be presented at the final event.
  • Enjoy fully covered participation costs, including travel, accommodation, and meals.
