The University of Arizona (UArizona) is pleased to announce the Dr. Maria Teresa Velez Diversity Leadership Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year. This award is given annually to a doctoral student who, through their teaching, research, or outreach and service, has demonstrated a commitment to furthering diversity in education, higher education, and the community at large.

In honor of Dr. Maria Teresa Velez, former Associate Dean, University of Arizona (UArizona) Graduate College, and her lifelong commitment to promoting graduate student diversity and inclusion and pushing for the highest of excellence, the Graduate College established the Dr. Maria Teresa Velez Diversity Leadership Scholarship.
This award is given annually to a doctoral student who, through their teaching, research, or outreach and service, has demonstrated a commitment to furthering diversity in education, higher education, and the community at large.
The award consists of $25,000 plus full base (main campus) graduate tuition and individual student health insurance (excluding AFAT fee and any differential tuition) for one year only. The selected fellow may not hold concurrent graduate assistant/associateships or student wage positions or defer the award for the following year.

- All doctoral programs at the University of Arizona, except for UA Online, JD, MD, DVM, and Pharm-D programs.

Who Can Apply for the Dr. Maria Teresa Velez Diversity Leadership Scholarship?
- U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in a doctoral program on the University of Arizona’s main campus. They must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
How Are Applicants Selected?
- Applicants must be nominated by their academic unit. Selection is based on a two-page essay detailing contributions to diversity and inclusion, a curriculum vitae, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member.

- U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
Where Will the Award Be Taken?
- The award is applicable to doctoral studies at the University of Arizona’s main campus.
How Many Awards?
- Two awards are available for the 2024-2025 academic year.

How Long Will the Award Last?
- The award lasts for one academic year. It cannot be deferred or combined with other assistantships or wage positions.

- Applications are by nomination only. The Director of Graduate Studies or Graduate Coordinator of each UArizona doctoral program must submit the nominee’s materials, including the essay, CV, and letter of recommendation.
