The Canada Graduate Scholarships โ Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) give graduate students a special chance to develop international relationships and acquire experience conducting research abroad. This supplement supports students’ academic and professional development by helping to defray the costs of undertaking research overseas with up to $6,000 in funding.

Tell Me About The Award:
The CGS-MSFSS program provides Canadian graduate students holding a Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) or Vanier CGS the opportunity to pursue short-term research abroad. The goal is to build global linkages, enhance international collaboration, and expand the research network of Canadian graduate students.
Students who currently hold a Vanier CGS at the doctoral level or a Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the master’s or doctoral level are eligible.
Which Fields are Eligible?
All fields supported by the three agencies: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Who can Apply for the Michael Smith Canada Graduate Scholarship?
To be eligible to apply for this supplement, you must
- have accepted or currently hold a CGS (masterโs or doctoral) or eligible Vanier CGS
- undertake your proposed trip abroad no earlier than the competition deadline date
- not hold, or have held, any other CGS-MSFSS during the course of your graduate studies
To remain eligible during the research study period abroad, you must
- hold an active CGS at the time your research study period abroad starts
- be registered in a graduate research studies program at a Canadian institution for the duration of your research study period abroad
- take up the award within one year of receiving the notice of award for the CGS-MSFSS
- return to complete your degree at your Canadian institution
How are Applicants Selected?
Selection is based on:
- Alignment between CGS research goals and proposed activities abroad.
- Significance and feasibility of the research at the foreign institution.
- Justification for the choice of host institution and supervisor.
- Relevance and anticipated benefits for the applicant’s current research.
Which Countries Are Eligible?
- All countries are eligible for the research trip abroad.
Where will the Award be Taken?
- Research must be conducted at a foreign institution that meets eligibility criteria, such as foreign universities, research centers, or institutes.
How Many Awards?
- A total of 250 supplements are awarded annually (45 for CIHR, 80 for NSERC, and 125 for SSHRC). Additional supplements may be awarded if funds are available.
What is the Benefit of the Award?
- Up to $6,000 to cover travel, living, and other costs related to the research study period abroad (e.g., accommodation, meals, visas, and insurance).
How Long Will the Award Last?
- The minimum stay abroad is 2 months, and the maximum duration is 6 months.
How to Apply for the Michael Smith Canada Graduate Scholarship:
- Submit your application through your institutionโs internal selection process.
- Ensure all required documents (including letters of support and budget) are complete.
- Follow your institution’s internal deadlines before the final agency deadlines of June 10 and October 10.
