The application deadline for the Rest of World Labor x Tech Fellowship 2024 for Journalists Globally is October 4, 2024. 

Tell Me About The Rest of World Labor x Tech Fellowship 2024 for Journalists Globally:

Rest of World, with support from the Ford Foundation, is launching the second round of its Labor x Tech reporting initiative. This opportunity is for 12 reporters from regions outside the West who are interested in exploring how technology is reshaping labor globally. Contributors will produce four stories over the course of a year (November 1, 2024 – October 31, 2025) and receive $5,000. Rest of World will cover all reporting-related expenses, including travel. The program focuses on journalists from countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Colombia, and Brazil.

Who can Apply For The Rest of World Labor x Tech Fellowship 2024 for Journalists Globally?

Also, applicants are to meet the following criteria:

  • Have been working as professional reporters in their home country
  • Have published original articles on issues that are critical to their communities; we’d prefer that contributors who have a basic understanding of the tech and business landscape in their countries, but we don’t require that they have extensive experience in tech reporting
  • Are curious about how tech has transformed the nature and definition of work, and are willing to go deep to explore the human experience and cost of such work
  • Can bring their own experiences and perspectives to inform and advance the journalistic work they are undertaking
  • Are passionate about writing about labour injustices and holding powerful people and companies accountable 
  • Want to explore new ways to tell stories, including digging into data, incorporating audio, and more.

Which Countries Are Eligible?

All countries especially: Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Colombia, and Brazil.

What is the Benefit of the Award?

Additionally, applicants will benefit the following:

  • Contributors will publish four stories over the period from November 1, 2024, to October 31, 2025.
  • Contributors will receive a total payment of $5,000 for the four stories.
  • Rest of World will cover all reporting-related costs, including travel expenses.

Please attach your resume and in your email body, provide the following:

  • Tell us in 300-350 words what’s the most compelling issue around tech workers in your community, and why you think it is worth pursuing for a story. The more specific you can be the better. We’re looking for ideas you are eager to jump into reporting on Day 1.
  • Share two relevant stories you’ve published recently that you’re particularly proud of. Tell us your role in shaping the story, the obstacles you might have overcome, and how you addressed them.
