Tell Me About The United Nations Regional Course in International Law for Africa:

The Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, in cooperation with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the African Union, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), organizes the United Nations Regional Course in International Law for Africa. The course will take place in person at the ECA facilities in Addis Ababa from 20 February to 14 March 2025, conducted in English. It will accommodate up to 30 participants, including a limited number of spots for self-funded participants.

Who can Apply For The United Nations Regional Course in International Law for Africa?

Also, applicants are to meet the following criteria:

• Candidates must have a legal background with professional experience in international law.
• Candidates must be fluent in the language in which the course is offered (English in 2025).
• Selected candidates are to certify that they can attend the course in its entirety.
• The Regional Course accommodates up to 30 participants.
• The course is open to candidates from United Nations Member States that are also members of the African Group.

How are Applicants Selected?

When selecting participants for the Regional Courses, organizers consider candidates’ qualifications, the scope of their professional duties, the relevance of the training to their roles, and gender balance. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

The United Nations does not charge a fee at any stage of the application and selection process. The United Nations does not concern itself with information on candidates’ bank accounts.

Furthermore, applicants will access the following benefits:

• Fellowship recipients will have their travel, accommodation, meals, medical insurance, and training materials covered.
• Fellowship recipients will also receive a modest stipend for other living expenses, in line with United Nations fellowship policies.
• A limited number of spaces are available for self-funded participants.
• Self-funded participants are responsible for covering all costs related to their participation, including travel, medical insurance, accommodation, and living expenses.
• Training materials will be provided for both fellowship and self-funded participants.
